JOINT M.A. DEGREE FRENCH STUDIES/JOURNALISM

 

The joint master's degree in French studies and journalism offered in cooperation with the Department of Journalism provides education and training at the master's level for students seeking careers as professional newspaper, magazine, or broadcast journalists with a special expertise on France. The program combines training in multidisciplinary French Studies with journalistic writing or broadcasting skills. It draws on courses offered by the Institute of French Studies and the Department of Journalism. In addition to a comprehensive examination, the requirements include a final project, which consists of a feature article on a subject related to contemporary France, French speaking countries, or Franco-American relations. The degree can be completed in two years.

I. ADMISSIONS REQUIREMENTS

Students must be formally admitted by both the Department of Journalism and the Institute of French Studies. Prior experience in journalism is not required, but French language fluency (reading and oral comprehension) is a prerequisite for admission.

II. PROGRAM OF STUDY

Four elements compose the structure of this 44-point program:

1. Courses in Journalism totaling 20 points and including:
• Three of the fololowing courses (Writing, Research, and Reporting I and II and Ethics and/or First Amendment Law)

• Two Reporting courses from the available elective offerings.

2. Courses in French Studies totaling 24 points and including
• 19th Century French History (G46.1610)
• Five elective courses chosen in consultation with the IFS advisor

3. A comprehensive examination in French Studies, comprising a three-hour written and one-hour oral exam covering :
a. 19th and 20th Century French History (2 hours)
b. French Society OR Politics and the Economy OR Culture in Society (1 hour)

4. An M.A. project in the form of a professional piece of journalistic work focusing on a French subject.
It may be a magazine piece, a radio or television documentary, or a series of newspaper articles. The M.A.
project will be supervised by one member of each department.
