WOMEN AND SLAVERY IN
THE AMERICAS
V97.0600-001
Professor Krauthamer
This course will examine the history of African and African
American women enslaved in the United States
and British Caribbean in the 19th Century. We will consider
issues of labor, reproduction, cultural expression and resistance. By
focusing specifically on women's experiences, we will seek to understand the
ways in which chattel slavery treated enslaved women differently from or the
same as enslaved men. We will explore the ways in which enslaved men and
women understood marriage, motherhood, friendship and conflict in enslaved
communities.
