The department cultivates connections with German Universities and New York based cultural institutions. We are grateful for continued support from the Deutscher Akademischer Austauschdienst (DAAD), the Goethe Institute, the Consulate General of the Federal Republic of Germany, the Austrian Cultural Forum and the Max Kade Foundation. Collaboration with these institutions is maintained through the Deutsches Haus at NYU that has enjoyed their generous support over many years. The Haus offers a program of lectures, workshops and conferences in close coordination with the department. Workshops on "Vernacular Modernism," on authors such as Joseph Roth, Robert Musil or Gershom Scholem, and international conferences on "Nietzsche," "War and Violence," "The New Urbanism," or "Globalization and Language" were held and some of them have led to the publication of anthologies.
Deutsches Haus invites four German writing authors every year as writers-in-residence. This program is financed by the Deutscher Literaturfonds, Kulturstiftung der Länder, Max Kade Foundation and Deutsches Haus funds. Readings, performances and literary workshops have made significant contributions to the literary life of the department, NYU and, indeed, the larger reading public of New York.
In 1999, Mrs. Ilse Wunsch-Mainzer pledged the donation of a substantial fund to the Department of German. This fund is now administered by the Graduate School of Arts and Science. It provides support for the annual "Otto and Ilse Mainzer Lecture Series," organized by Deutsches Haus. Among the distinguished speakers have been Professors Judith Butler, Catharine McKinnon. Michael Müller, Sander Gilman, and Samuel Weber.
Financial contributions of our sponsors make possible the maintenance of the department's stimulating intellectual and literary life.
