ABOUT THE MDI

The research focus of the MDI, which resides at the nexus of key areas in physics and biology, will serve as a springboard for interdisciplinary research with other NYU departments. The MDI complements the newly established Center for Soft Matter Research in the Department of Physics. These two initiatives offer a unique opportunity to examine self-assembly and hierarchical organization of complex materials across length scales ranging from the molecular to the colloidal regime, that is, from the nanoscale to the microscale. The existence of complementary centers in Physics and Chemistry will provide synergy that will strengthen both departments in tandem.

The MDI is run by Professor Michael D. Ward and Professor Marcus Weck.

The MDI unites faculty with expertise and interests in the design and synthesis of complex molecular and supramolecular architectures and materials. The MDI has procured the latest X-ray diffraction spectrometers which will be housed in the department’s Shared Instrumentation Facility, and greatly enhances the already impressive array of modern instruments available to our research faculty. Since its ribbon cutting ceremony in May 2007, the MDI has hosted numerous guests from the United Staes and abroad.

The Molecular Design Institute hosts the Summer NYU-CCNY SESMI-REU. This exciting research opportunity allows undergraduates to probe fundamental aspects of soft materials and interfaces in state of the art facilities.
