Scuola Normale Superiore di Pisa (Italy)
Awards 3 research grants to foreign students (not Italian citizens) for the Academic Year for the following disciplines: classical philology, linguistics, and history; modern philology and linguistics; history; art history; philosophy. The applicants must have obtained their laurea or MA no longer than four years ago and they cannot be older than 32. The recipients of the one-year fellowship will attend courses and seminars at the SNS in Pisa and will receive a stipend of 20.000.000 Italian Lire (approximately $11.000). The William B. Schallek Memorial Graduate Fellowship Award
sponsored by the American Branch of the Richard III Society
Awards usually in the amount of $500 to $1000 to graduate students pursuing studies in a field or fields relating to the life and times of King Richard III, or more generally to late fifteenth-century English history and culture.  An application form and instructions may be downloaded from the Richard III and Yorkist History server, at http://www.r3.org/edu3.html

Residential Fellowships at the Newberry Library
These fellowships provide assistance to researchers who wish to use the collections of the Newberry Library in Chicago.  The Newberry's holdings number more than 1.5 million volumes and 5 million manuscript pages.  The Newberry's collections concern the civilizations of Western Europe and the Americas from the late Middle Ages to teh early twentieth century.  Long-term fellowships are available to post-doctoral scholars for periods of six to eleven months.  Applicants must hold the Ph.D. at the time of application; stipends are up to $30,000.  Deadline for applications in in mid-January. Short-term fellowships are intended for post-doctoral scholars or Ph.D. candidates who have a specific need for the Newberry collections.  The tenure of short-term fellowships varies from one week to two months; the amount of the award is generally $1200 per month.  Deadline for applications is March 1.

The John Leyerle-CARA Prize for Dissertation Research
In recognition of John Leyerle's outstanding contributions and continous service to CARA, to the Medieval Academy, and to the general conduct of medieval studies in North America, CARA is pleased to announce the establishment of an annual prize in the amount of $1000 for disseration reserach.  The prize is intended to support the doctoral research of a dissertator who needs to consult materials available in the University of Toronto's Robarts Library, the collections of the Dictionary of Old English and the Records of Early English Drama projects, and the library of the Pontifical Institute of Mediaeval Studies.  The selection committee will be composed of the Chair of CARA and medievalists on the University of Toronto faculty.

Applications must include three items:  (1) a proposal of not more than three pages outlining the research project, including a statement that specifically addresses the pertinence of material in Toronto collections to the dissertation research; (2) a brief curriculum vitae; and (3) a letter of support from the dissertation director or major professor.  Graduate students of the University of Toronto currently in residence are not eligible.
