Dear Colleague,

In Fall, 2000, the FAS Policy and Planning Advisory Committee charged a sub-committee comprised of representatives from the committee and the Women's Faculty Caucus to examine the issue of gender equity for Arts & Science faculty. The membership of the subcommittee was as follows:

Carol Shoshkes Reiss, Biology, Chair
Tony Movshon, Neural Science
Rita Wright, Anthropology
Nancy Regalado, French
Beth Shinn, Psychology
Ann Lederman, Institutional Analyst, (Ex-officio)
Joe Juliano, Senior Associate Dean (Ex-officio)

The members of the sub-committee did an enormous amount of work on this important issue, and we are all in their debt. In addition to the results of the historical analysis that are reported below, the work of this sub-committee resulted in the development of a faculty database that will allow us to track recruitment activities, merit rankings, and other factors affecting gender equity in the future.

The historical analysis shows that we have much to be proud of within FAS, and everyone who has been involved with gender equity issues over the years, from department chairs to the deans to the Women's Faculty Caucus, is to be congratulated for their efforts. On the other hand, we can not become complacent and must continue to monitor these issues, with special attention on recruitment. The Dean's Office is committed to repeating this analysis in the future on a regular basis and reporting the results to the faculty.

Let me again extend my gratitude to the sub-committee who addressed a complex issue with great rigor.

Dean Richard Foley
