Private Space Available on the Washington Square Campus for Nursing Mothers
NYU supports nursing mothers who return to work and school and continue to breastfeed their child. NYU Family Care maintains two private spaces where new mothers can nurse their child or express milk
The rooms are located at 25 West 4th Street on the Classroom Level in the former lounge area of the Women's Restroom and are equipped with an electrical outlet, table, comfortable chair, as well as paper towels, a clock, and reading materials.
A changing table is available for those occasions when your child accompanies you to campus.
In addition, NYU Family Care is making available a limited number of insulated cooler bags to new mothers who register to use one of our Nursing Mother Rooms.
Alternative Locations
If these locations are not easily accessible from your workplace or classroom, work with your Supervisor or Student Services Office to identify a space that can meet your need for a clean, private, comfortable space with an electrical outlet, chair and table with easy access to a sink with running water. Family Care staff are available to help locate an alternative location.
Talk with Your Supervisor
Nursing mothers who wish time to express milk must discuss this need for an accommodation with their direct supervisor. Information on NYU's Policy and Nursing Mothers in the Workplace Act is available here.
Tip Sheets Support Nursing Mothers
NYU Family Care offers two information sheets to assist you: Practical Tips for a Nursing Mothers' Return to Work and Nursing Mother's Return to Work Checklist.
