The concept for the NYU Women's Leadership Forum originated in 2005 when national attention put the role, function, and challenges facing women in the academy into the spotlight. From the controversial debate about why relatively few women pursue and flourish in the sciences, to reports about the persistence of the glass ceiling in the academy and elsewhere in society, to the work/family collision course encountered by many women striving to achieve both a successful career and a home life of acceptable quality - the time seemed right for NYU to reflect upon and examine itself in that context.

The objective of the NYU Women's Leadership Forum is to foster leadership development, facilitate professional growth, and create opportunities for outreach among women in leadership roles. It is expected that these efforts will create new and exciting ways for women at NYU to take part in the vibrant life of the University. Through professional and personal networking, access to electronic resources and materials, and participation in an array of events such as conferences, guest presentations, and opportunities for professional development, women can exchange information and interact with others who have common interests and goals.

On October 19, 2007, over 200 women faculty and administrators in leadership roles attended a conference entitled, "Women and Leadership at NYU." They gathered to explore whether and how gender plays out as a significant factor in their leadership experiences at NYU. Also examined were the following questions:

  • What have been the experiences of women leaders at NYU?
  • How can the University foster an environment that encourages, nurtures, and cultivates future women leaders?

"Women and Leadership at NYU" consisted of the following: (1) Opening remarks by Planning Committee Chair Diane Yu, (2) Keynote address by President John Sexton, (3) "Flash Reports" on various activities currently underway in the schools and in the administration of special interest to women, (4) a "Conversation on Leadership," with women panelists from around NYU, moderated by Wagner School Dean Ellen Schall, (5) Luncheon Roundtables on designated topics, where facilitated discussions took place, and (6) a wrap-up session moderated by GSAS Dean Catharine Stimpson, including brief reports from the reporters at the Luncheon Roundtables.

"Flash" reports included:

  • Center for the Study of Gender and Sexuality, Jane Tylus
  • FAS Women's Faculty Caucus, Liz Phelps
  • Child Care Task Force, e. Frances White
  • Women in Medicine, Carol Bernstein
  • Women in Business, Frances Milliken
