Standards of academic standing and academic probation

A master’s degree in economics is an increasingly essential degree in a global economy. The M. A. program in economics at New York University is the most rigorous in the country. It will give you a solid background in advanced economics and enable you to upgrade your skills in applied economic analysis and public policy. It is also an excellent preparatory degree for those students wishing to go on to a PhD program elsewhere in the U. S.

The Department of Economics at NYU stands as one of the outstanding departments in the country. Its faculty comprises world- renowned scholars, such as Thomas Sargent and William Baumol. The Department is located in one of the most dynamic cities in the world, an international center of finance, commerce, science, and culture.

ADMISSION & FINANCIAL AID

Admissions Requirements
Admission to the M. A. program in economics is limited to students of outstanding promise. Applicants for the M. A. program should have completed Intermediate Microeconomics, Intermediate Macroeconomics, at least one semester of calculus and a course in statistics – all with at least a B+ grade. They must also take the general test of the Graduate Record Examination and obtain GRE Quantitative and Analytical scores in the 75th percentile and above (e. g. over 700). They should also have GRE Verbal scores in the 50th percentile and above (e. g. over 500). PLEASE NOTE: GMAT scores are no longer accepted in lieu of GRE.

All international students must take the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL). Exceptions to this rule include students who attended English- speaking college- level institutions and students from English- speaking countries, such as the United Kingdom and Australia. International students should aim for TOEFL scores above 270. Successful applicants may also be required to take a diagnostic language evaluation test at the American Language Institute at NYU and to take additional English language courses tailored to the needs of graduate students.

Applicants should have a Grade Point Average of 3.25 and above in their undergraduate work.

We evaluate applications on their general merits, not on an individual criterion. It is the general picture of performance that is important rather than meeting every one of the above requirements.

Financial Aid
Although we do not offer direct financial aid to MA students (including International students) who obtain external awards from recognized academic sources of funding outside of NYU (e.g. a foundation, private agency, government).  Students can apply for an award toward tuition through the Graduate School's Tuition Incentive Program (TIP). Loans may also be available.  For useful information on financial aid please visit http://www.nyu.edu/gsas/Admissions/Financial.html. Applications and specific details about TIP eligibility criteria can be obtained from Graduate Enrollment Services or at http://www.nyu.edu/gsas/fininfo/tipform.html. If you have further questions on the TIP, please contact Graduate Enrollment Services.

COURSES OF STUDY

Master of Arts
Formal requirements for the Master of Arts degree in economics are the satisfactory completion of graduate studies, totaling at least 32 points and the writing of a special project report. Most courses are worth 3 points.  The M. A. degree includes five core courses (Microeconomics, Macroeconomics, Applied Statistics and Econometrics I and II, and Mathematics for Economists). The advanced certificate option is also available to qualified master’s level students holding degrees from institutions other than New York University. A minimum of six specialized courses is required. When certain required courses are not offered, the department may substitute other appropriate courses to satisfy the requirements for the advanced certificate.

please consult the GSAS bulletin for full course requirements.

FIRST- RATE EDUCATION

In the master's program, our full-time faculty is supplemented by a distinguished team of executive faculty who combine first-rank training in economics (Ph.D.) with outstanding expertise in specific areas of applied economics. Students are also allowed to take relevant courses at the NYU business school in addition to the regular departmental offerings. This strategy is designed to give students a well- rounded education that will be useful after graduation in the non- academic world.
