Scholars at Risk Network
Hosted by New York University, The Scholars at Risk Network (SAR) is an international network of universities and colleges responding to attacks on scholars because of their words, their ideas and their place in society. SAR promotes academic freedom and defends the human rights of scholars and their communities worldwide.
Since its inception, SAR has assisted over 400 scholars from all over the world. With over 124 member institutions in the United States, 151 international members located in Africa, Asia, Central and South America, and Europe, and affiliations with a number of academic associations, SAR strives to provide sanctuary to professors, lecturers, researchers and other intellectuals who suffer threats in their home country. Through temporary academic positions, SAR members help scholars and their families to escape dangerous conditions and to continue their important work.
In addition to direct assistance, Scholars at Risk conducts advocacy and education activities to target root causes of intellectual repression and to promote systemic change; facilitates a Speaker Series featuring threatened scholars; and develops international and regional networks of defenders of academic freedom.
