Dean's Award for Student Research
Information and Guidelines
Description: The Dean’s Award for Student Research was established to motivate and encourage NYU College of Dentistry dental students to become involved in oral health related research (basic, clinical, or behavioral) at NYUCD. The award is composed of a research award to support the student’s work in the form of a stipend for qualified dental students. The majority of the awards will be of two types that support participation in the 5 or 8 week summer program (calendar http://www.nyu.edu/dental/msp/calendar.html. There is an award to support D1 students registered in the Honors in Research course (http://www.nyu.edu/dental/intranet) and an award to support incoming students, before they begin the curriculum at NYUCD. Incoming students who directly apply for the Summer Research Program (http://www.nyu.edu/dental/research/application.html) will automatically be considered for a Dean’s Award and are exempt from writing the proposal described below.
- Eligibility: Competition is open to all pre-doctoral students in good standing. Because most meaningful projects cannot be accomplished in one year, incoming and D1 students will receive priority over other students who have not previously expressed interest in doing research. Although group efforts are possible, the ideal situation is for one person per proposal. D1 students MUST be registered for Honors in Research course held in the spring and 5 weeks in the summer.
- Mentor's Eligibility and Responsibility:
The faculty mentor is responsible for determining the student's ability to carry out the project and for giving the student the appropriate guidance for the research, if the application is approved. The mentor should have appropriate resources available to support the proposed research as well as IRB and IACUC approvals when appropriate. The student will be required to present at Greater NY Dental meeting and/or the AADR meeting as well Research Day at NYUCD. This must be budgeted in the student award or in the mentor’s budget.
- Proposal Format: The proposal must be single spaced, 12 PT type, with 1" margins and include the following:
- Cover page to state the following:
- Student's name
- ID number
- Class (D1, D2...)
- Social Security number (required for funding)

- Current curriculum vitae of applicant (maximum 2 pages).
- Current NIH Biographical Sketch of faculty mentor (maximum 4 pages)
- F. If the study involves human subjects, approval for the project must be obtained by the mentor from the Human Subjects Committee (IRB) before research begins. Students must pass the human subjects tutorial. Funding may not be made until final approval is received.
- G. If the study involves animals, the student must receive training on "Humane Use of Animals" from the OLAS and the mentor must have a valid IACUC protocol.
- Submission:1 hard copy of the application (includes A through E) should be delivered to Office of Research, Room 1036W and 1 electronic copy should be emailed to ea41@nyu.edu.
- Review: Members of the Research Advisory Committee (RAC) or a subcommittee formed by RAC will review the proposals. Criteria: scientific merit of the proposal, qualifications of the mentor(s), and qualifications of the student(s).
- Mechanisms of Support: Students whose applications receive the top scores will receive the award. Support will be provided for students’ academic endeavors associated with the project and include:
- Travel to a meeting (Greater New York Dental and/or AADR) to present research results.
- When two or more students are involved in the study, the award amount will be divided equally.
- Student living expenses during the summer. (Maximum stipend is $500/week of fulltime work)
- Requirements of the award:
- Presentation of research results at the Annual NYUCD Research Day.
- Presentation of research results at Greater New York Dental, AADR and/or a similar meeting.
- Attendance at the Summer Student Research Program headed by Dr. Kathleen Kinnally is required if the student is not registered in D1 Honors in Research (see website www.nyu.edu/dental/msp). All students must present their results as a poster at the end of the summer.
- Students, whose projects are not completed by the end of one year, must submit a short progress report explaining what has been accomplished, and why more time is needed to complete the project.
- A final report that discusses the accomplishments and papers/abstracts presented is due within 1 month of the end of the project. If additional resources are requested, explain how the previous award is related to the current application before applying for another award.
