Alpha Omega Fellowship Research Award
Information and Guidelines
- Description: The Alpha Omega Fellowship Research Award
was established to motivate and encourage dental students to
become involved in research at NYUCD. The award carries a monetary
award of $2000 to a qualified dental student.
- Eligibility: Competition is open to all pre-doctoral
students in good standing; however, D1 and D2 students will
receive priority over D4 students who have not previously expressed
interest in doing research. This is due to the fact that the
most meaningful projects cannot be accomplished in one year.
- Mentors Eligibility and Responsibility: The Alpha Omega
Fellowship Research Award requires that the student be mentored
by two faculty members from different disciplines preferably
one clinical and one basic science. Each mentor needs to complete
the form entitled, "Mentor Support--Alpha Omega Fellowship Research
Award Application." This form is appended, and is also available
from the Office of Research, or on the NYUCD website.
Faculty mentors are responsible for determining the student's
ability to carry out the project and for giving the student
the appropriate guidance for the research, if the application
is approved. The mentors should have appropriate resources available
to support the proposed research.
- Proposal Format: The proposal should be no more than
five (5) pages long, excluding references. Each proposal must
include the following:

data (2-3 pages).

with Federal regulations, New York University has implemented
an on-line tutorial for Human Subjects Research. This tutorial
must be taken by all NYU faculty and students engaged in research
involving human subjects prior to submitting an application.
Tutorial and applications are available on the Office of Sponsored
Programs web page (www.nyu.edu/osp).

- Review: Members of the Research Advisory Committee
(RAC) or a subcommittee formed by the RAC will review the proposals.
Criteria: scientific merit of the proposal, qualifications of
the student, and qualifications of the mentors.
- Mechanism of Support : The student whose application
receives the top score will receive the Fellowship Award and
a certificate of recognition. The award is composed of two parts.
- The $2000 monetary award is provided to support academic
endeavors associated with the project; for example, travel
to a lab to learn a new technique, travel to a meeting to
present research results (e.g. AADR), or the purchase of
computer programs or books directly related to the proposed
research.
- Mentors support (maximum of $1500.00/award) will be allocated
