Oral Cancer kills one American every hour, making it more deadly than melanoma or cervical cancer. Like many diseases, oral cancer takes a disproportionate toll on minorities. Now, thanks to an $8.3 million grant from the NIH, the NYU Oral Cancer RAAHP* (Research for Adolescent and Adult Health Promotion) Center is investigating many of the major questions that will reduce the burden of oral cancer in minority populations and other citizens.

  • Conducts research to identify factors contributing to oral cancer disparities.
  • Develops and tests new strategies for eliminating them.
  • Investigates why minorities do not get oral cancer exams that might pick up the earliest stages ofthe disease.
  • Determines the best new techniques to diagnose oral cancer
  • Studies the bioethical issues related to reducing minority health disparities
  • Trains Scientists for careers in oral cancer disparities research.
