Patient Information

1. Do you provide emergency care?

You do not require an appointment for emergency care. Our emergency care center is located at 345 East 24th Street in Suite 207 on the 2nd floor.

Emergency care is available in the mornings for patients arriving between 8:30am and 11:00am. For afternoon and evening emergency care, patients must arrive by 2pm and 6pm. There is no evening emergency care on Fridays. Weekend emergency care is also available from 9am to 3pm.

During all other times, patients with excessive bleeding, swelling, oral infection and/or trauma injuries should seek treatment at the nearest hospital emergency room. The closest emergency room to NYU is the Bellevue Hospital Emergency Room located at 462 1st Avenue. You can call them direct at 212-562-3015.

2. How do I become a patient at the College of Dentistry?

Our main entrance is located at the corner of 24th Street and First Avenue. Our patient registration area is located on the main floor of the lobby. To schedule an appointment, please call (212) 998-9800. Appointments for new patients are available Monday through Friday.

3. What is the cost of treatment?

Because of our focus on education, we are able to offer our services at lower fees than the cost of comparable procedures at most private practices. After a treatment plan is prepared that addresses you needs and desires, the fees associated with your care will be presented and discussed. Payment for services is then due at the time each procedure is completed.

Acceptable payment methods include cash, checks (with proper identification), money orders, most credit cards and New York State Medicaid (with a valid Medicaid card). For patients that require financial assistance, third party financing is also available.

4. Do you provide dental care for patients covered under a State of New York Medicaid plan?

The NYU College of dentistry is an Article 28 contracted provider for dental services covered under the State of New York Medicaid Plans. We therefore accept all patients with straight Medicaid coverage.

Additionally we are able to provide care under the State of New York Medicaid Managed Care Programs. Please note however that certain plans require the patient to elect NYU College of Dentistry as their primary dental care provider. You should check with your plan before making an appointment to avoid any delays in service.

5. Do you accept other Dental Insurance?

The NYU College of Dentistry accepts and files dental claims only with insurance companies providing coverage for New York University faculty, administrators, and staff.

We do however welcome patients with other dental insurance plans but do not have the resources to file and manage dental claims. Patients are therefore responsible to pay for treatment at the time services are provided and obtain reimbursement from their dental insurance company. Our staff will provide you with all of the information required including a summary statement of treatment provided and copies of x-rays, if needed.

Although most dental insurance plans have a maximum yearly reimbursement, your dollar will go much farther at the NYU College of Dentistry because our fees are generally well below the average private practice fees.

6. How long is the first appointment?

Your initial visit must be scheduled. It will last approximately two hours and will include registration and appropriate x-rays. A second two-hour visit will be required to complete a comprehensive oral examination and inform you of our findings and diagnosis, at which time we can discuss various treatment options.

7. What documents are required at the initial visit?

Photo identification: (if any of these identification sources do not include the patient's current address, a second form of identification is required which includes the current address (example: a utility bill).

• Non-driver's ID (issued by the Dept. of Motor Vehicles)
• Medicaid card with photo
• School or employer ID
• Passport

• Medicaid card without photo
• Insurance card
• Credit card
• Utility or rent bill
• Library card.

8. When are appointments available and how long are they?

Appointments are held in two-hour blocks and are available Monday through Thursday at 8:30 am, 10:45 am, 2:00 pm and 6:00 pm and on Fridays at 8:30 am, 10:45 am and 2pm.

9. Who provides my treatment?

NYUCD trains future dentists, therefore the person providing your treatment will be a dental student who has advanced to the patient- treatment phase of their training. All care is closely supervised by expert faculty to ensure you are getting the best care possible.

NYUCD also trains general dentists to become specialists, and depending on the complexities of your condition, it is possible that these specialists may contribute to your care. The specialists in training also work under the direct supervision of expert faculty specialists.
