Catastrophe Prepardness
In the same way that NYUCD acted as a catalyst to make oral cancer a national issue, soon after the terrible terrorist
attacks of September 11, 2001, the College embarked on a course of action that has made it the unrivaled leader among
dental schools in fostering a national initiative to enable dentists to play a critical role within a coordinated,
collaborative response to deal with the threat of terrorism, including bioterrorism and other catastrophes. Examples
include NYUCD becoming the first U.S. dental school to mandate a full, four-year curriculum in terrorism preparedness
that all student must take in order to graduate; and NYUCD, along with the NYU School of Medicine, being awarded a
$2.7 million grant by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security to examine how to best prepare additional first
responders, primarily dentists, for a disaster.
