Dr. George J. Witkin Remembered

On October 2, 2008, Dr. George J. Witkin, a beloved alumnus, Professor Emeritus of Periodontics, and benefactor, who passed away in June at the age of 92, was remembered at NYUCD by a group of people who were nearest to him.

A graduate of the NYU College of Dentistry Class of 1942, Dr. Witkin was associated with the College for over 30 years, as a Professor and Chairman of the Department of Periodontology, Assistant Dean, Associate Dean, and Interim Dean. Associate Dean for Development and International Affairs, Dr. Stuart M. Hirsch, a former student and close friend of Dr. Witkin and his wife, Ann, recalled him as "an excellent teacher who mentored numerous students and was widely respected for his clinical expertise, his kindness, his charm, and his philanthropy.

Dr. Witkin served in World War II and was proud of his contribution to our country. For over 50 years, he practiced privately in offices at Rockefeller Center. In addition to his beloved wife, Ann, he is survived by daughter Georgia; son Roy; and grandchildren.

In 2006, he and Ann donated a multi-million-dollar gift to his alma mater, which was recognized with the establishment of the Dr. George and Ann Witkin Graduate Center for Clinical Excellence. The gift represented the profound love and respect that George and Ann Witkin had for one another and for the NYU College of Dentistry. Dr. Witkin's memory and legacy are assured a lasting place of honor at his alma mater and in the hearts of all who loved him.
