Dr. Simone Duarte, Assistant Professor of Basic Science Craniofacial Biology, has been awarded the prestigious 2010-2011 New York University Whitehead Fellowship for Junior Faculty in Biomedical and Biological Sciences. The Whitehead Fellowships assist faculty in the early years of their independent research careers to conduct focused research projects in the biomedical and biological sciences and enhance their ability to compete successfully for external funds.
Dr. Duarte's fellowship was awarded for her project entitled "The Effect of Photodynamic Antimicrobial Chemotherapy (PACT) on Biofilm." PACT is a novel therapy that may be used for prevention and treatment of infectious diseases associated with biofilms, such as dental caries. This is the first time that this important fellowship has been awarded to a faculty member from the NYU College of Dentistry.
