NYUCD further expanded its patient care services last January when it opened
a second faculty practice. Located at the NYU Medical Center and known as
Faculty Practice North, the new facility complements and extends
the private-practice services offered at the original NYU Dental Faculty
Practice, which opened in Greenwich Village in 1997. The renovations were
funded in part by a large grant from Nobel Biocare, USA, Inc.
The new faculty practice is staffed by faculty with special expertise in
oral medicine who comprise an Oral Medicine Group. As a private practice
integrated within the NYU Medical Center, the Oral Medicine Group is dedicated
to providing comprehensive oral health services for patients with

medical illness, orofacial pain disorders, salivary gland disorders, and
oral mucosal disease. Particular attention is being paid to developing strong
relationships with faculty in the departments of medicine, surgery, neurology
and dermatology, since their patients are at increased risk for oral disease.
Faculty Practice North also provides a consultation and referral resource
for NYU dental faculty and other dentists whose private patients might benefit
from a collaborative treatment approach. Other services include pediatric
dentistry, orthodontics, implant dentistry, prosthodontics, oral and maxillofacial
surgery, and general dentistry.
According to Dean Alfano, Faculty Practice North offers the multiple
advantages of tertiary care for medical patients at NYUs Tisch Hospital,
a referral resource for dentists with challenging cases, and the proximity
and professional interaction among NYU medical and dental faculty that is
critical in fostering collaborative patient care and research activities.
