Dr. Frederick A. Curro Joins NYU's Bluestone Center for Clinical Research

Dr. Frederick A. Curro Appointed Clinical Professor of Oral Medicine and Chief of Pharmacotherapeutic Research
Dr. Frederick A. Curro, an academician, clinical researcher, and pharmacologist, has been named Chief of Pharmacotherapeutic Research at the Bluestone Center for Clinical Research at the NYU College of Dentistry, it was announced recently by Dr. Michael C. Alfano, Dean of the College of Dentistry. Dr. Curro holds both a D.M.D. degree and a Ph.D. in pharmacology and chaired the Department of Pharmacology at Fairleigh Dickinson University College of Dental Medicine.
He also has been appointed coordinator of the College’s pharmacology program and a Clinical Professor of Oral Medicine.

At 8,500 square feet, the Bluestone Center (www.bluestonecenter.nyu.edu) is the world’s largest clinical research center set in a dental school and the only one equipped for fully-monitored overnight medical and dental studies. The center provides a home for biomedical, behavioral, epidemiological, and clinical scientists to work together using FDA-protocols to conduct clinical trials relating to new therapies before they are brought to market. In addition, the Center provides training in clinical research for biomedical students and faculty.

Dr. Curro served most recently as Vice President/Director of Corporate Clinical and Medical Affairs at GlaxoSmithKline and at Block Drug Company, Inc., and as Executive Director of Clinical Research and Operations for Transkaryotic Therapies, Inc., a Cambridge, Massachusetts-based proteomic/genetic biotechnology company.

“Dr. Curro’s outstanding background in medicine, chronic pain and pharmacology brings to NYUCD a rich and broad expertise that will enhance our educational, community service and research initiatives and contribute significantly to our ongoing efforts to bring medicine and dentistry closer together,” said Dr. David Sirois, Associate Professor and Chairman of the Department of Oral Medicine.

Dr. Jonathan Ship, Director of the Bluestone Center, added, “We are delighted that Dr. Curro has joined us to help provide quality research for industry-sponsored pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic studies. His pharmacology background will be an asset to the medical and dental research sponsors who collaborate with the Bluestone Center on Phase I – IV protocols.”

In addition to his appointments at the NYU College of Dentistry, Dr. Curro will continue to serve as a consultant on clinical pharmacology and regulatory affairs to The Forsyth Institute, as a member of the dental staff at Hackensack University Medical Center and the Coast Guard Academy’s dental clinic in New London, Connecticut, and as a visiting professor at Tufts University School of Dental Medicine.
