How can I find articles on a specific dental/medical topic?

To find articles on a specific topic in dentistry, you need to do a literature search in Medline. The library offers free access to MEDLINE through the OVID database system. OVID is only available to NYU College of Dentistry staff, faculty and students. PubMed provides free access to the Medline and other National Library of Medicine databases.

What is the OVID database system?

OVID is a networked database system that provides access to MEDLINE (including the Index to Dental Literature), CINAHL, HealthSTAR, CancerLit, AIDSLINE, PSYCINFO and a growing collection of biomedical journals. OVID is only available to NYU College of Dentistry staff, faculty and students.

Why doesn't the library have a journal issue yet when my colleagues have it at home?

The library's journals are mailed library rate, which is generally slower than regular mail.

Where are the copy machines?

The copy machines are located in the rear of the library, on the right-hand side. Copy machines do not accept coins; you must purchase a Vendacoder card to use them.

Where can I get change for the Vendacoder machine?

The library does not provide change.

How do I locate books?

You search for books by subject, author, title, etc. using MEDCat, the online catalog of the NYU dental and medical libraries.

How long can a book be borrowed?

Circulating books circulate for 4 weeks and one renewal except if a "hold" has been placed on the specific item.

Reserve and Reference materials do not circulate. If needed for outside photocopying, the Circulation Supervisor must approve it. This material must be returned within two hours.

Copy 1 of a journal title does not circulate. Only copy 2 of any journal title circulates outside of the library for two weeks with one renewal except if a "hold" has been placed on the specific item. If copy 1 is needed for outside copying, it must be returned within two hours.

Rare books and audiovisuals do not circulate. Requests to remove from library must be approved by the Director.

How can I renew a book?

We provide three ways for you to renew library books:

View your patron record online. Select and renew books from the list of items you have checked out.
Renew by telephone at (212) 998-9794.
Come to the library in person and renew the book at the Circulation Desk.

A book can be renewed only once. For a second renewal, books must be physically brought into the library.

Who do I contact to make a donation?

Contact Van Afes at (212) 998-9787, or use the Contact Us Form.

Where do I get an NYU E-mail and Dial account? Who do I contact if I forget my e-mail password?

Students, staff and faculty of NYUCD are eligible for e-mail/Internet/Dial accounts. Just come down to the library with a validated NYU ID card, and we can activate your accounts. If you happen to forget your password, you must come down to the library and speak with a library staff person.

What is Albert? Can I print my transcript from Albert?

Albert is NYU's student information system for transcripts, grades, etc.
For more information, go to the Albert Home Page.
