Community of Science NYU community only
The largest and most comprehensive database of professional researcher profiles in North America. Contains over 60,000 profiles. COS also offers Funding Opportunities. The Company also publishes a number of databases on the Web, including MEDLINE, AGRICOLA, GeoRef, Ei Compendex, U.S. Patents, Funded Research, Federal Register, and the Commerce Business Daily. COS is also developing collaborative authoring systems for the online development of scientific and scholarly content. CRISP: Computer Retrieval of Information on Scientific Projects public use
CRISP is a pair of large searchable databases of federally funded biomedical research projects conducted at universities, hospitals, and other institutions. Visitors to the CRISP site can gather information on a wide variety of projects, research grants, cooperative agreements, and other projects funded by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and other government agencies. The site hosts two databases, one containing current awards and the other historical awards. Both can be searched by keyword with a number of modifiers. Returns include grant number, PI name and title, project title, an abstract, institution, and dates. An overview and FAQ are provided. CRISP is updated weekly.

Produced by Elsevier Science,a major biomedical and pharmaceutical database indexing over 3,500 international journals in the following fields: drug research, pharmacology, pharmaceutics, toxicology, clinical and experimental human medicine, health policy and management, public health, occupational health, environmental health, drug dependence and abuse, psychiatry, forensic medicine, and biomedical engineering/instrumentation. There is selective coverage for nursing, dentistry, veterinary medicine, psychology, and alternative medicine. (This database is the European counterpart of MEDLINE).

ERIC (SilverPaltter Database) NYU community only
The ERIC (Educational Resources Information Center) database, sponsored by the U.S. Department of Education, is a bibliographic database that contains education-related documents and journal articles. Information in ERIC corresponds to two printed abstract/index journals: Resources in Education (RIE) and Current Index to Journals in Education (CIJE). RIE announces some 14,000 documents each year, and CJE announces some 20,000 journal articles, extracted from more than 750 serials. "

Gray literature is foreign or domestic open source material available through specialized channels that may not enter normal channels of publication, distribution, bibliographic control, or acquisition by booksellers or subscription agents.

The DNA sequence of the Human Genome is now freely accessible to all, for public or private use, from the National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI). The Center is a part of the National Library of Medicine at the National Institutes of Health. An ongoing research challenge is to piece together and analyze the multitudes of data produced by the Project. NCBI has completed its first assembly of the DNA sequence into an organized and easily accessible resource-including labels that point to important regions of the sequence such as those containing genes-and is now making it public.

MEDLINE (Available thru OVID databases) NYU community only
Medline is the premiere database of the biomedical journal literature. As the computerized version of Index Medicus, it is the bibliographic database of the National Library of Medicine. Medline contains over 14 million references to journal articles from over 3,600 selected journals from 1966 to the present, 75% of which are in English. The majority of citations entered after 1975 include abstracts.

MEDLINEplus public use
This is a major enhancement to NLM's consumer health database. In addition to nearly 400 medical topic pages, MEDLINEplus includes over 4,000 articles from the adam.com medical encyclopedia. This encyclopedia brings health consumers an extensive library of medical images as well as thousands of articles about diseases, tests, symptoms, injuries, and surgeries.

OLDMedline contains citations published in the Cumulated Index Medicus 1960 through 1965, and covers the fields of medicine, pre-clinical sciences, and allied health sciences. Subject searching of this file is available through key words (the original Medical Subject Headings, MeSH, assigned in 1960-65) and text phrases. Unlike Medline, this file contains no abstracts nor MeSH heading (MH) field data from NLM's current controlled vocabulary.

Pharmaceutical News Index (Available thru ProQuest Direct) NYU community only
PNI contains bibliographic information and indexing for all articles published in 20 key U.S. and international pharmaceutical, healthcare, biotechnology, and medical device industry newsletters. Coverage is available from 1974 forward for most publications. The database also includes citations to company and industry reports from Thomson Financial Networks' Investext database. The reports are prepared by leading brokerage firms and financial research organizations.

PopLine public use
Popline provides worldwide coverage of population, family planning, and related health issues, including family planning technology and programs, fertility, and population law and policy. Popline focuses on particular developing-country issues including demographics, AIDS and other sexually transmitted diseases, maternal and child health, primary health care communication, and population and environment. Created and maintained by Pacific Information Resources, this useful meta-site links to a wide array of free searchable public record databases, more than 1,500. The links are organized geographically, with nationwide databases for the US and Canada, and state databases broken down into statewide, county, and city. The number of databases listed for each state varies widely, but most include property records, court dockets and filings, professional licenses, and administrative code. Other databases include city job postings, restaurant inspections, most wanted, inmate locator, lottery winning numbers, toxic release inventory, births and deaths, and charitable organizations.

Social Security Death Index public use
Presents the Social Security Death Index (SSDI), a database of deceased individuals who died after 1937 and for whom a lump sum death benefit was claimed. Includes Social Security numbers, first and last names, birth dates, death dates, states of primary residents, and other related information for each person listed. Notes that the information is needed to obtain a copy of the original Social Security application. Records are filed by Social Security numbers and are searchable via name, birthplace, and parents' names. Posts contact information for the Social Security Administration via street address and toll-free telephone number. TOXNET public use
TOXNET covers the toxicological, pharmacological, biochemical, and physiological effects of drugs and other chemicals. It is composed of a number of subfiles, several of which are unique to TOXNET. About 45% of the approximately 120,000 records added per year are from the TOXBIB subfile, which is derived from MEDLINE. The TOXBIB and BIOSIS (since August 1985) subfiles may be searched using the U.S. National Library of Medicine's Medical Subject Headings (MeSH). An Online thesaurus is available to aid in locating MeSH descriptors.
