COURSE OVERVIEW:

Periodontal surgery is rapidly moving from resective techniques to regenerative and reconstructive techniques. Root coverage (reconstruction) with attachment (regeneration) is not only possible, but routinely predictable in areas of marginal tissue recession using both free and pedicle grafts.

A comparison of various surgical techniques for root coverage will be presented as well as a systematic approach for selection of the proper surgical techniques.

  • Evolution of mucogingival surgery to periodontal plastic surgery
  • Root coverage
    • Laterally position pedicle flap
    • Free gingival graft
    • The sub-epithelial connective tissue graft
    • The coronally positioned flap
    • The coronally positioned flap augmented with connective tissue
    • Surgical treatment of amalgam tattoo
  • Ridge augmentation
  • Ridge preservation of osseous grafts in extraction sockets
  • Papilla preservation
  • Treatment of the "gummy" smile – excessive gingival display
  • Post operative management of the periodontal surgery patient to minimize discomfort and maximize healing
