Director

Program Description
The curriculum includes graduate-level biomedical science as well as orthodontic specific courses. The program devotes 20 percent of the time to didactic education, in the form of lectures, seminars, and laboratory courses.

General Description
The goal of the Advanced Education Program in Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics is to provide students with an education of the highest quality that will enable them to render proficient orthodontic care to their patients throughout their professional career.

The biomedical courses and core curriculum includes the following topics: Craniofacial Development, Biology of Bone, Head and Neck Anatomy, Clinical Pharmacology, Introduction to Pedagogy, Basic Life Support, and CPR. The discipline-specific courses include the following topics: Orthodontic Records and Clinical Interpretation, Diagnosis and Treatment, Orthodontic Theory and Mechanotherapy, Biomechanics, Current Literature in Orthodontics, Interdisciplinary Treatment, Growth and Development, Orthognathic Surgery, Orthodontics Practice Management. Students are expected to participate actively by presenting cases in diagnostic conferences (case presentations), literature review, and seminars.

In the Clinic, students treat a large number of patients presenting a variety of malocclusions, representative of all malocclusions encountered in a contemporary orthodontic practice. They gain valuable experience in diagnosis, treatment planning, orthodontic therapy, and patient management. Patients are treated with state-of-the-art orthodontic appliances. Students spend about 65% of their time in patient care. They are assigned to group practices to better address the patient needs, to interact with patients in various stages of treatment, and to make more efficient use of their time in the clinic.

Research
Under the guidance of full time faculty mentors, students develop with their research sponsor, a research project and bring it to completion. Students are expected to present their completed research project at the annual meeting of the American Association of Orthodontists, and to write a thesis, which must be accepted by the committee. In addition, they are expected to turn in the research material in a publishable format.

Teaching
Students teach both at the graduate and undergraduate level.

Accreditation Status
The program is fully accredited by the Commission on Dental Accreditation of the American Dental Association.

Length of the Program
Up to these days, the Advanced Education Program in Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics has been starting August 1 of each year and lasted two full calendar years (24 months). However, for the students starting August 1, 2009, the duration of the program will be three years.
