Advanced Education Programs in Prosthodontics
The goals of the program are to provide foundation knowledge and diverse experiences in all aspects of prosthetic dentistry to exceptional applicants who are interested in the Jonathan and Maxine Ferencz Advanced Education Program in Prosthodontics. The three-year program fulfills the educational requirements of the Council on Dental Education of the American Dental Association and the American Board of Prosthodontics. The program comprises formal instruction in biomedical sciences and clinical and didactic seminars. The program prepares residents for a career in clinical practice, teaching, and/or research. Residents, on completion of the program, will be proficient in prosthodontics, restorative aspects of implant dentistry, occlusion, and dental materials. During the entire training, interaction with other specialties is emphasized through clinic practice and interdisciplinary seminars.

Approximately 25 percent of the overall program time is dedicated to didactic components. Emphasis is placed on gaining a critical and analytical attitude toward existing and new information. Evidence-based dentistry is a critical component of the Jonathan and Maxine Ferencz Advanced Education Program in Prosthodontics.
First-year courses include Oral Medicine and Pathology, Complete Dentures, Literature Review in Complete Dentures, Evidence-Based Dentistry, Fixed Prosthodontics, Lab Procedures in Fixed Prosthodontics, Oral Physiology and Occlusion, Removable Partial Dentures, Research Methodology, Introduction to Pedagogy, Host Response, and Cardiopul-monary Resuscitation. Additionally, all first-year residents must successfully complete BCLS, PALS, and Human Subjects Training.
Second-year courses include Head and Neck Anatomy, Clinical Pharmacology, Pain and Anxiety, Comprehensive Fixed Prosthodontics Treatment Plan, Dental Materials, Ethics, Implant Dentistry, A Journal Club, Maxillofacial Prosthetic Literature Review, Removable Partial Denture Literature Review, and Periodontic Prosthesis.
Third-year courses include Host Response, Pathogenic Biofilms, Fixed Partial Prostheses Literature Review, Implant Literature Review, and A Journal Club.
Clinical training comprises 55 percent of program time. The patient population in the Prosthodontics Clinic is extensive and diverse. Residents function as members of a multispecialty, interdisciplinary team. They become proficient in the diagnosis, treatment, and maintenance of a variety of prosthodontic needs for patients. Committed to excellence, prosthesis fabrication is performed in high-quality laboratories. The program boasts 30 trained, full- and part-time prosthodontists as clinical faculty plus numerous prominent scholars as visiting lecturers. An exceptional student to faculty ratio averaging 3:1 enhances the residents' clinical experiences. Approximately 30 percent of these faculty are Board Certified Prosthodontists.
All residents are required to complete an approved research project. The project requires the residents to demonstrate the ability to understand the scientific process including data collection, statistical analysis, and presentation in a scientific forum. Additionally, residents are required to attend several scientific and specialty-related meetings. Each resident is required to present at least one Table Clinic at a professional meeting. Residents are encouraged and mentored to enroll in the Master of Science Degree Program in Biomaterials as part of their three-year program. Research within the program is very active and has been a major strength.
Students teach both at the graduate and undergraduate level.
The program is accredited by the Commission on Dental Accreditation of the American Dental Association and fulfills all requirements for board eligibility as stated by the American Board of Prosthodontists.
Length of the Program
The program commences on the first Tuesday after Labor Day in September and ends on August 31 of the third academic calendar year.
All applicants should be graduates of dental schools accredited by the American or Canadian Dental Association. General practice or other advanced training residency and experience in research are highly recommended.

Applications for admission to the program are accepted for review until September 15 of the year preceding the academic year in which acceptance is sought.
