Intimate Violence

The Centre for Restorative Justice at Simon Fraser University

Funded by the Correctional Service of Canada, this initiative by Simon Fraser University promotes restorative justice principles and practices; provides education, program models, training, evaluation and research; and facilitates outreach, dialogue and advocacy.

Construyendo Circulos de Paz/Constructing Circles of Peace
Circles of Peace is a first-of-its-kind domestic violence treatment program that uses a restorative justice approach to reduce violent behavior in families. Restorative justice emphasizes repairing the harm caused by criminal behavior. It is accomplished through cooperative processes that incorporate all the affected parties, including perpetrators and victims who choose to participate, extended family members and the community. Circles of Peace is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization, and an Arizona Department of Health licensed organization.

Family Violence Prevention Fund

The Family Violence Prevention Fund works to prevent violence in the home and in the community by reaching out to men and youth, promoting community leadership, and transforming how health care providers, police, judges, employers and others understand and address violence.

Healing Circles: The Jewish Family Service of Clifton-Passaic, New Jersey
The Jewish Family Service of Clifton-Passaic, New Jersey is a comprehensive, non-discriminatory social service agency. The Healing Circles program is a pilot project at the agency designed as a restorative justice intervention for families experiencing domestic violence who do not wish to involve the criminal justice system. The Center on Violence and Recovery is a co-developer of the Healing Circles project and Dr. Linda G. Mills, CVR Executive Director, provides clinical support.

John Braithwaite and Restorative Justice

John Braithwaite, an eminent expert in restorative justice, has contributed considerable research on the application of restorative justice principles to business crime, and juvenile and adult crime.

Minnesota Department of Corrections Restorative Justice Department

The Minnesota Department of Corrections Restorative Justice Department assists in developing restorative justice approaches to community safety.

National Fatherhood Initiative

The National Fatherhood Initiative seeks to confront the problem of father absence through education and research, and improve the wellbeing of children by engaging fathers to become more involved, responsible and committed parents.

The New York City Gay and Lesbian Anti-Violence Project

The New York City Gay and Lesbian Anti-Violence Project (AVP) provides free and confidential services for lesbian, gay, transgender, bisexual and HIV-affected victims of violence. Services may include counseling, advocacy within the criminal justice system, referrals to practicing professionals and other assistance.

No More Tears, San Quentin Prison
No More Tears is a prisoner-created, prisoner-run program in the San Quentin State Prison with a mission to "curb violence and detrimental behaviors within targeted communities by creating and implementing an effective crime and violence prevention program."

Restorative Justice Online

Restorative Justice Online is a service of the Prison Fellowship International Centre for Justice and Reconciliation, and includes definitions, slideshow presentations, an annotated bibliography on restorative justice, links to other relevant sites, and United Nations and Council of Europe documents on restorative topics.

SAFE

Stop Abuse For Everyone (SAFE) is a human rights organization serving groups that tend to be overlooked by domestic violence services, including straight men, gays and lesbians, teens, the elderly and immigrants. The organization provides services, publications and training.

Trauma and Violence Transdisciplinary Studies (TVTS)
New York University's Trauma and Violence Transdisciplinary Studies program offers students, faculty and scholars “a space for critical inquiry into all of the theoretical, critical, and clinical aspects of the analysis and treatment of trauma, violence, and their aftermath.” Based in many of the same theoretical frameworks and research interests, the Center on Violence and Recovery often co-sponsors events with TVTS, and works together to further our understanding of community violence and trauma.

Tubman Family Alliance

The Tubman Family Alliance offers intervention and support services to help prevent violence in relationships and families through education and advocacy.

University of Minnesota Center for Restorative Justice & Peacemaking

The University of Minnesota Center for Restorative Justice & Peacemaking in an international resource center that supports restorative dialogue practice, research and training. The center also provides video and print materials on restorative justice and victim offender mediation.

Violence Anonymous

Violence Anonymous is a 12-step program for women and men who, through shared experience, strength, hope and honesty are recovering from violent behavior.

 

Community Violence

American Red Cross

The American Red Cross provides information, resources, and services in the wake of natural disasters, terrorist attack, war, and other violence, as well as information on disaster preparedness.

Centers for Disease Control Emergency Preparedness and Response

The CDC’s Emergency Preparedness and Response site provides public health information, as well as general guidelines on preparation and planning in cases of trauma or disaster.

The City University of New York Dispute Resolution Consortium

Since 1993, John Jay College of Criminal Justice has housed the City University of New York Dispute Resolution Consortium (CUNY DRC), a university based academic center which serves as a comprehensive coordinating mechanism to advance research and innovative program development throughout the City University as well as the New York City metropolitan area.

The Israel Trauma Coalition

The Israel Trauma Coalition is an initiative of the Caring Commission of the UJA-Federation of New York, which brings together seven Israeli organizations involved in the treatment of trauma resulting from terrorist acts.

The National Center for Children Exposed to Violence

The National Center for Children Exposed to Violence strives to reduce the incidence and impact of violence on children and families by providing training and support to professionals, treating children and families affected by violence, and increasing professional and public awareness of this problem.

The National Center for Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder

The National Center for PTSD provides information on community violence, its effects on children and adolescents, and how media coverage of traumatic events influences communities.

New York University’s Center for Catastrophe Preparedness and Response

CCPR works to enhance the nation’s response to crises by maximizing academia’s contributions to research and dialogue on security and overall emergency preparedness.

The Northern Ireland Centre for Trauma and Transformation

The Centre for Trauma and Transformation was established in the aftermath of the Omagh bombing to provide psychological treatment to victims, and education, training and aid to the community.

The Victims Unit

The Victims Unit raises awareness of issues affecting victims of the conflicts in Northern Ireland, and promotes an improvement in the standard of services provided to victims.

The Wider Circle is a volunteer organization and registered charity created to respond to the needs of victims of the conflicts in Northern Ireland suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder.

PEER SUPPORT

The Center for the Study of Traumatic Stress of the Uniformed Services University

This center focuses on PTSD and the psychological effects of terrorism, bioterrorism, traumatic events, disasters and combat. The website contains fact sheets, information for families of returning veterans, interviews and relevant articles.

Gift from Within

This non-profit organization provides general information to help PTSD survivors and loved ones communicate through a global network and to develop new resources for people with PTSD or other stress-related disorders.

The International Critical Incident Stress Foundation

This website is dedicated to the prevention and mitigation of disabling stress through education, training and supportive services to all emergency services personnel. The site contains articles on critical incidents, critical incident stress management, education and training materials, and resources.

The International Society for Traumatic Stress Studies

This organization is dedicated to trauma treatment, education, research and prevention. The website provides a forum for those with an interest in the study and treatment of traumatic stress to share research, clinical strategies, public policy issues and trauma theory.

Law Enforcement Wellness Association

This site is dedicated to the physical and psychological health of those sworn to serve. The website includes information on peer support, suicide prevention and physical fitness. It includes a reading list, access to relevant articles and links to other websites.

The National Center for PTSD

The NCPTSD was created within the Department of Veteran’s Affairs in 1989 to address the needs of veterans with military-related PTSD. Its mission is to advance the clinical care and social welfare of America’s veterans through research, training and education in the science, diagnosis and treatment of PTSD and stress-related disorders. The site contains many articles and educational fact sheets about PTSD, the effects of terrorism and disasters, and family issues.

The National Institute for Mental Health’s Depression Awareness Campaign: Real Men, Real Depression

The National Institute of Mental Health’s awareness campaign for depression in men features real stories by men struggling with depression. Public safety personnel are prominently featured in this campaign. The site also provides information about the signs and symptoms of depression, treatments available and how to get help.

National Police Suicide Foundation

This organization provides a suicide awareness and prevention training program and support services to meet the psychological and spiritual needs of emergency workers and their families. The site contains pertinent news stories, information on police suicide awareness training seminars, a suggested reading list, resources and relevant links to other websites.

Police Families

Created by Dr. Ellen Kirschman, the author of I Love a Cop, this site is designed to provide law enforcement families with essential psychological information and access to family support services. It contains sections for kids, training, a chat room, coping strategies and links to other resources.

Police Organization Providing Peer Assistance (POPPA)
Police Organization Providing Peer Assistance (POPPA) is a volunteer peer support network whose commitment is exclusively dedicated to providing a confidential, safe and supportive environment for police officers and their families. The POPPA Organization facilitates families and individuals in coping more effectively with the multitude of stresses experienced during the course of their law enforcement profession. They are dedicated to the prevention and reduction of marital problems, substance abuse, suicide as well as existing psychological disorders among our officers and their families.

Police Rehabilitation and Retraining Trust

PRRT, located in Ireland, provides retired police officers and those preparing for retirement with physiotherapy, psychological counseling, and career and personal guidance counseling.

Tears of a Cop

This website promotes awareness of the epidemic of law enforcement PTSD and suicide. The site contains articles of interest to police officers and their families; educational resources about PTSD, depression and suicide; interviews with experts; a chat room; and police officers’ stories about their struggles and successes with trauma and stress.
