Jerome Bruner Library on Advancing University Learning

Accessing the RefWorks Database

1. Go to the RefWorks log in page. If you are using an off campus computer, you may need to go through this log-in. (This will open a new window.)

2. The Log –in Name is “CTE” and the password is “library”. (Note: This is a read-only password, meaning you won't be able to accidentally change or delete information.)

3. The database records will appear sorted by authors; by default, the first listings will be full journal issues for which no specific author is listed. Use the options under the “Search” menu (second from the left in the top menu bar) to more effectively browse through the catalogue. There are three basic ways to search:

a. Lookup by Author or Periodical – selecting one of these options will take you to an alphabetical list of all authors or periodical titles. Selecting one of the authors/periodicals will bring up a list of all resources pertaining to that name/title. In periodicals, this list will contain full issues as well as individual articles collected in the article file.

b. Lookup by Descriptor – this option will take you to an alphabetical list of various subtopics (for example, “Teaching Mathematics” or “Assessment, Grading, and Testing”). Clicking on a subtopic will bring up a list of all resources to which that subtopic has been assigned.

c. Advanced Search – this option will take you to a standard search screen and allow you to search within any bibliographic category as well as across categories.

4. If you are not already familiar with RefWorks, consider looking over the Tutorial located in the “Help” menu to acquaint yourself with some of the more advanced features.

As of June 2006, the RefWorks catalogue contained all of the individual articles and journal issues on file, as well as all books acquired since October 2004, and the titles (though not the bibliographical details) of all VHS and DVD resources. We are continually working to add our older books and update the VHS and DVD information. If you are looking for a specific book or video resource that is not listed in RefWorks, to arrange time to browse the collection, or to checkout an item, please email center.for.teaching@nyu.edu.
