The GRI Research Institutes were created to support NYU full-time faculty and graduate students, based in New York City, who wish to have NYU infrastructural support while conducting research abroad. Faculty should be on leave and have extramural funding OR not scheduled to teach in a given semester, and have access to additional funds. Graduate students (in all degree programs) should be on fellowship or have other external support. Departmental approval/support is required for all those that will participate.

GRI institutes have been established at NYU's sites in Athens, Berlin, Florence, London, Madrid, Paris, Prague, Shanghai, Tel Aviv, and Washington, D.C. Most locations have capacity, on average, for five faculty and five graduate students.

Faculty and doctoral student fellowships are available at all sites during the fall and spring semesters, and a limited number of sites during the summer.

Each Research Institute will draw together a diverse group of university faculty and graduate students, with priority given to those who have a research-related need to be in a given location (archives, collections, colleagues, etc.), and/or are applying for the first time. Scholars may hold only one GRI fellowship per academic year. Fellowships must meet the minimum length requirements. Faculty fellowships begin at 3 weeks in length. Student fellowships must be at least 4 weeks long.

Faculty and graduate student fellows at GRI Research Institutes are given office space, modest administrative support, one round-trip, economy ticket from New York to the site (to be booked through the GRI program), and a flat-rate per-diem subsidy intended to partially defray living costs. Per diem rates for the Research Institutes are as follows: Athens, Berlin, Florence, London, Madrid, Paris, Prague, Shanghai, and Tel Aviv are set at $75 per day; Washington, D.C. is set at $70 per day. Regardless of the length of the fellowship, the per diem may not exceed 90 days.

Fellowship applications must be submitted by the set deadlines. All efforts will be made to accommodate interested NYU faculty members, but as space is limited, applicants are encouraged to register their interest as far in advance as possible. While student fellowships are designed for doctoral candidates, exceptional master's candidates that meet the program criteria may apply for the sumer semester.

Faculty at Abu Dhabi & Shanghai

We are pleased that the GRI fellowship program is now available to full-time faculty at the Abu Dhabi and Shanghai campuses. While a per diem is not provided by GRI, we encourage faculty to confer with their campus, upon acceptance, to learn whether such funds are available. As with all applications, faculty should confirm with their campus whether they will be approved to participate and be away during the time requested.

IRB Requirements

Aapproval by the appropriate Institutional Review Board (IRB) is required for work that involves human subjects. If you are not sure about whether you require IRB approval, please read the IRB Policy for further details. You can also email ask.humansubjects@nyu.edu with specific questions you have regarding this process.

Important Notes:

  • The length of residencies during the academic semester must meet the minimum requirement, and the duration will be dictated by local visa restrictions. In the case of London and Washington, D.C. the maximum stay is one semester; at Athens, Berlin, Florence, Madrid, Paris, Prague, Shanghai, and Tel Aviv, it can normally be no longer than 89 days. Visa regulations vary from country to country and according to the status of each applicant. Fellows are responsible for knowing these and working with an outbound advisor at OGS to plan travel within legal limits.
  • Faculty and graduate student fellows may not seek employment, teach, or engage in other significant professional commitments while they are in residence.
  • All fellows are expected to be present at the institute on a regular basis (at least 3 times per week), and are required to attend any GRI meetings during the semester. This program is not appropriate for those who have office space elsewhere or do not need office space. It is also not appropriate for anyone planning extensive travel or those who will not be based in the city.
  • Fellows are required to have access to additional funds in order to participate in the fellowship program. This is because the per diem is not sufficient to entirely support the scholar while away. This can be extramural funding, grants, partial salary (for faculty) or access to personal funds.
  • This program does not provide housing for its participants.
  • GRI will not provide reimbursement for travel already purchased or a ticket for a different trip.
  • This program neither identifies nor subsidizes local schooling options for dependent children of participants.
  • Any person who is involved in an externally funded research program, or is designated a principal investigator in a federally funded program, must consult with the Office of Sponsored Programs (OSP) before participating in the GRI research institutes abroad.
  • If you have a disability and have questions about a location or institute prior to applying, please contact the Moses Center for Student Accessibility (CSA) at (212)998-4980 or mosescsa@nyu.edu. We strongly encourage you to contact CSA as far in advance as possible to assist you in making an informed decision.
