FAQs
Faculty Housing Office
What is the primary role of the Faculty Housing Office?
The Faculty Housing Office is a comprehensive housing resource for University faculty. The office works directly with the Deans, faculty, senior staff and other University constituents on all housing matters. The office assigns housing units, sets lease terms, manages residential facilities and construction, and oversees homeownership programs.
What programs are offered by the Faculty Housing Office?
- Rental properties for eligible faculty members
NYU owns and manages a portfolio of 2,100 apartments in large and mid-sized buildings in the Washington Square neighborhood. Most faculty members reside in either Silver Towers or Washington Square Village, two large residential complexes located south of Washington Square Park.
Whom do I contact if I have a maintenance issue with my apartment?

How do I sublet my apartment while I am on leave?
Sublet Service for Current Tenants
Tenants wishing to sublet their apartment on approved leave or sabbatical may do so after written approval is received from the Office of Faculty Housing. As stated in all NYU leases, and in compliance with NYC law, sublets must be a minimum of 30 days with a maximum of 1 year. The rent charged by the Overtenant to Subtenant may not exceed the Overtenant’s rent plus a 10% surcharge for a furnished apartment.

Who is Eligible for Faculty Housing?
Full time tenured or tenure track faculty are eligible for Faculty
Housing. Visiting faculty, Adjunct faculty, and other non-full time
faculty or scholars are not eligible for housing. Faculty housing does
not provide short term, visitor, or temporary housing.
How do I apply for rental housing?
Faculty members interested in faculty housing must contact their school’s Dean. The Faculty Housing Office cannot process requests directly from faculty members. Dean’s offices evaluate whether a faculty member qualifies for Faculty housing based on University Policy and priorities. Once a faculty member’s eligibility is determined, the Dean will submit the housing request to the Faculty Housing Office. Housing requests received our office are then reviewed by a committee comprised of members of the University’s leadership. Since there is not enough faculty housing to meet demand, housing resources are primarily reserved for full-time tenured and tenure line faculty. Housing is also intended only as a primary residence.

I am in housing, how may I change apartments?
A request for a housing change must be submitted by your Dean. If your request is approved, you will be shown an alternate apartment and can decide if you would like to move. There is often a significant wait for apartments, please be patient.
May I make renovations to my NYU apartment?
All requests for renovations must be submitted to the Faculty Housing Office. Each request will be carefully reviewed on an individual basis. Please note that if unauthorized changes are made, you will be responsible for restoring the apartment to its original condition before moving out.
Are there housing options for visiting faculty?

Global Assignment
In order to maintain your Washington Square housing, faculty members must be full time in New York with the exception of up to one year on approved paid or unpaid leave or sabbatical or two years for those on global assignment. NYU Faculty members on Global Assignment, who do not return to New York full time after two years, are expected to relinquish their Washington Square housing. Faculty members will be accommodated upon their return to New York in an apartment adequate to their family size at that time. Please reach out to facultyhousing.office@nyu.edu with questions about this policy.
