As an undocumented student at New York University you are eligible for the same scholarships and financial aid as fellow documented students, however you should be aware of additional eligibility information.

Besides following the application instructions noted under How to Apply For Aid, you’ll find what you need to know outlined below to help you successfully apply for financial aid as an NYU student.

Please note: As an undocumented student you are not eligible for federal financial aid. However, students living in New York State should submit a TAP application to be reviewed for state funding.

NYU would also like to acknowledge the contributions of UndocuNYU (formerly the NYU Dream Team), a student group focused on trying to address issues facing undocumented members of the community, for their dedication and partnership on this and other challenges.

Who is Considered Undocumented

NYU considers an undocumented student:

  • Someone who does not possess appropriate documentation allowing themselves to reside legally in the U.S.
  • Those who have been granted Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) status.

Steps to Eligibility

As an undocumented student, you are eligible for NYU scholarships based on financial need.

After submitting the CSS Profile by the required deadlines, we will review your information.

You will learn about your potential financial aid eligibility upon acceptance for admission through an email asking you to log in to your Albert Student Center. Any NY State TAP funding you are eligible for will be added to your award package after your eligibility has been confirmed by the state and your enrollment has been certified by the Office of the Registrar.

Please note: As an undocumented student, you are still subject to income and financial aid form verification. If selected, you or your guardians must submit tax return transcripts, or,  if U.S. tax returns are not required, be able to provide other valid proof of earnings (such as W-2's).

Learn more on the Verification page.

Paying for Your Education

Considering your investment and ability to pay for your time at NYU is an important step towards becoming a student.

As a potential student, you can access planning tools, financial guidance and planning strategies through NYU’s iGrad.

You may also contact financial aid counselors for additional guidance, but please note that NYU does not consider appeals for additional scholarship funding or offer an internal loan program.

Because Undocumented Students are ineligible for federal financial aid, it is important that you analyze your resources to determine how their financial need will be met. It is rare that an NYU Scholarship alone is enough to cover the entire cost of attendance.

While you may explore the possibility of private educational loans to fund your education, NYU also offers several payment plan options to support your ability to pay for the portion of college costs you or your family are responsible for.
