FAQs
Incoming Exchange Students (from partner universities to NYU)
I am a student at a University that isn’t a partner of NYU, can I still participate in the International Exchange Program?
No. If you are enrolled at a University that is not a partner with NYU you cannot participate in the exchange program. At this time NYU is not looking to expand its partnership agreements. However, there are still opportunities for you to enroll at NYU for courses through the Office of University Programs Visiting Student sessions.
I am a student at one of NYU’s partner universities – how can I apply to NYU?
You must contact the office at your university that manages the nomination process for the program to learn how your school selects nominees. Typically it is the International Office, Office of International Affairs, or International Exchange Office who can assist you.
At which NYU schools can I take classes as an exchange student?

The School of Medicine, School of Dentistry, and School of Continuing and Professional Studies do not participate in the NYU International Exchange Program. Talk with your school’s international office to determine whether the Medical or Dental Schools at your university have established an exchange relationship with their counterparts at NYU.
The School of Law permits students with a baccalaureate in the study of Law to apply through the International Exchange program for one semester of study if their university has a listed partnership with NYU Law School. J.D., Ph.D. and postdoctoral students whose universities have an exchange relationship with NYU Law School may apply through the Hauser Global Law Program.
The Leonard N. Stern School of Business does not participate in the NYU International Exchange Program, but does participate in the International Business Exchange (IBEX) program. Outgoing Exchange Students (from NYU to a partner university)
Who is eligible to participate in the International Exchange Program?
To be eligible for the International Exchange Program, we generally require that undergraduates have completed at least 64 credits since matriculating at NYU and that graduate students have completed the first year of a masters or doctoral program prior to participation in the program. All students must be in good academic and disciplinary standing (GPA 3.0 or better) at the time of the application. Some of our partner institutions have specific GPA requirements.
In addition, to be eligible to participate in the exchange program you must maintain matriculation as an NYU student. If you do not maintain active enrollment status at NYU during your semester away (which includes the payment of NYU tuition), NYU will not be able to accept the transfer of credits for your semester (or year) away.
NYU Stern students are eligible to apply to schools that are not also partners of Stern’s IBEX exchange program. For example, if a Stern student wanted to apply to Yonsei University in South Korea, which is a partner of both the International Exchange Program and IBEX, the student would be required to apply through Stern’s IBEX program and would be ineligible to apply to Yonsei through the International Exchange Program.
How do exchange students pay tuition?
Students who are approved to enroll in the NYU exchange pay NYU tuition which allows you to maintain your financial aid package, including grants and scholarships (unique partner fees may be required). You may also apply for additional financial aid (in the form of loans) for study abroad through the NYU Office of Financial Aid.
How can I apply for the International Exchange program?
Please visit our website for a detailed description of the application process for current NYU students.
Can I apply for just one semester?
Students can participate in the exchange for one semester or a full academic year. Make sure to review the academic calendar of your selected partner university to ensure that the dates line up with NYU. For example, students applying to schools in Japan (Waseda University or Nagoya University) can apply for the academic year or the spring semester only. It is not possible to attend a Japanese university in the Fall and return to NYU in the spring because of differences in the academic calendar.
How competitive is the International Exchange program?
Admission to the International Exchange program is highly selective. An extremely limited number of spaces are available each year. Admissions decisions are based on several factors including a student’s personal statement (and how well the exchange program fits in with a student's academic and professional goals), GPA, and recommendations.
How will my credits be counted?
Credit systems vary from university to university. For example, at some European schools a typical full time course load is 30 ECTS (European Credit Transfer and Accumulation System) per semester or 60 ECTS per year. It is important to work closely with your NYU academic department when planning out your courses to determine if your courses will count for your major/minor and how your school's credit system will translate to NYU credits.
Will my exchange program credits transfer back to NYU?
Yes. All credits during your semester away will transfer back to NYU as general credits. You will need to work with your NYU academic department to determine if your courses' content will count for your major/minor requirements.
I'm interested in doing a program that isn't with an NYU partner university - how do I do that?
If you are interested in doing program outside of NYU's partner universities you will likely need to take a leave of absence from the university. You should meet with your academic advisor and home school dean in order to get approval for this and to ask about transferring credits back to NYU.
Can I participate in the exchange during the summer term?
Unfortunately the exchange program does not operate during the summer term.
