The NYU Steinhardt School of Culture, Education, and Human Development today announced that Larry Miller, music associate professor in its music business program, has been named director of the program effective September 1, 2015. He takes over from Catherine Moore, who had directed the program since 1997 and who will be moving to Canada in June 2016 after twenty years on faculty at NYU.

Miller, a veteran radio executive as well as a technology and music entrepreneur, joined the Steinhardt faculty in 2013. In addition to teaching, he most recently launched the highly successful music business podcast, Musonomics, which he produces in conjunction with NYU students. Musonomics has had more than 100,000 downloads since its launch in April 2015.

“Few people have Larry’s deep experience in the music industry, his proven track record of successful innovation, and his commitment to delivering a challenging and relevant music business education to our students, so we’re thrilled to have him take on this leadership position,” said Ron Sadoff, chair of NYU Steinhardt’s Department of Music and Performing Arts Professions and director of the Film Scoring Program. “The music business moves at lightening speed, and Larry has clearly shown that he not only can change, adapt, and succeed within this volatile market, but that he also knows how to inspire the next generation.”

“It’s been such an enormous pleasure to work with faculty like Catherine Moore and to teach such high caliber students, so I’m very excited to have the opportunity to help take this already excellent program to the next level,” said Miller. “From an academic standpoint, our program is a unique marrying of high-level musical training and challenging quantitative business classes offered in conjunction with NYU’s Stern School of Business. My goal is to raise the visibility of the program in the industry, nationally and internationally, secure the best industry placements and resources, and continue to attract the best students capable of inventing the future of the music industry.”

Miller began his career as a broadcaster at Tribune, NBC Radio Entertainment and WHTZ/Z100 New York, regarded as the most successful startup in U.S. radio. He later founded and operated Or Music, a Grammy Award winning independent record label and music publisher where he signed, recorded, and published multi-platinum artists Los Lonely Boys and Matisyahu. Other positions he’s held include partner at L.E.K. Consulting, executive vice president and general manager of MediaNet, and vice president of market development at AT&T Labs Research. He continues to advise media and technology companies and their financial sponsors on capital formation and growth strategy, digital product/service development, acquisitions and restructurings. He graduated from Brandeis University and holds an MBA from Columbia Business School.
