Veterans have played a rich role at NYU, from the returning soldiers who studied here on the GI Bill after World War II, to some of its most notable alumni, including director Oliver Stone, New York City Police Commissioner Ray Kelly, writers Frank McCourt and Howard Zinn, and U.S. Senator Jacob Javits.

In the spring of 2014, NYU’s student body included 300 veterans enrolled in courses.
