New York University College of Nursing is pleased to announce its Graduation Ceremony will take place on May 19, 2014, 9:30 AM to 11:30 AM, at the New York City Center, 131 West 55th Street, NYC.  Beverly Malone, chief executive officer, National League for Nursing, will deliver the keynote graduation address.  Eileen Sullivan-Marx, Dean and Erline Perkins McGriff Professor of NYUCN will present Beverly Malone with the Helen Manzer Award in recognition of exemplary leadership on behalf of the health of the nation.

 

“Beverly Malone is an inspiration to all nurses and particularly our graduates who have their full nursing careers ahead of them,” said Sullivan-Marx.  “She is an outspoken leader, engaged and committed to preparing a diverse nursing workforce focused on advancing the nation's health.  She has been a tireless advocate for increased support for nursing workforce development and advanced education for nurse educators to address the persistent shortage of nurses that threatens health care delivery.  At NYU College of Nursing, we are thrilled to have Beverly Malone speak to the remarkable Class of 2014.”

 

NYUCN will be granting a total of 606 degrees:  407 Baccalaureate Degrees; 180 Master’s Degrees; four (4) Advanced Certificates; six (6) Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) degrees; and nine (9) Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Nursing Research and Theory Development Degrees.

The Distinguished Clinical Colleague Award is being presented to Mary Ann Christopher, president and chief executive officer, the Visiting Nurse Service of New York, in recognition of outstanding clinical leadership; the Humanitarian Award is being presented to Elizabeth McCormack, founder and chair of the Partnership for Palliative Care in recognition of outstanding humanitarian efforts on behalf of professional nursing.

 

About Beverly Malone, PhD, RN, FAAN

 

Chief executive officer of the National League for Nursing since February 2007, Dr. Beverly Malone is among America's most vocal leaders in the national conversation about the nursing and nurse educator shortage, and the role of nursing in ensuring access to safe, quality, culturally competent care to diverse patient populations, domestically and globally.

 

Beverly Malone began her nursing career with a bachelor's degree in nursing from the University of Cincinnati in 1970. She combined further study with clinical practice, a master's in psychiatric nursing, and a doctorate in clinical psychology, which she earned in 1981.

Her distinguished career has mixed policy, education, administration, and clinical practice. Dr. Malone has worked as a surgical staff nurse, clinical nurse specialist, director of nursing, and assistant administrator of nursing. During the 1980s she was dean of the School of Nursing at North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University.

 

In 1996, she was elected to two terms as president of the American Nurses Association (ANA), representing 180,000 nurses in the USA. In 2000, she became deputy assistant secretary for health within the US Department of Health and Human Services. Just prior to joining the NLN, Dr. Malone was general secretary of the Royal College of Nursing (RCN), the United Kingdom's largest professional union of nurses, from June 2001 to January 2007. Dr. Malone was also a member of the Higher Education Funding Council for England (HEFCE).
