New York University received a record 52,727 applications from young men and women seeking admission to a spot in the freshman class on an NYU campus. NYU has degree-granting campuses in New York, Abu Dhabi, and Shanghai, and – following completion of the merger with the Polytechnic Institute – it is accepting engineering applications for the first time in approximately four decades.

NYU has offered a spot in the fall 2014 freshman class to approximately 18,000 students for a freshman class of approximately 6,000 across its campuses and schools. All applicants are notified by April 1; they have until May 1 to make their decision about attending NYU.

The number of applications represents individual applicants (an applicant to NYU is entitled to apply to one, two or three of the NYU campuses; however, when an applicant applies to more than one campus, it is counted as a single application to that campus).

This is the seventh year in a row of a record number of applicants to NYU, and the first time that freshman applicants exceed 50,000. Much of the difference between last year’s applications – 48,606 – and this year’s was propelled by addition of applications to the NYU Polytechnic School of Engineering. However, even when comparing apples-to-apples (2013 NYU plus NYU-Poly and the 2014 NYU total), there was an absolute increase of 1.3 percent.

NYU operates degree-granting research university campuses in New York, Abu Dhabi, and Shanghai. Of the more than 52,000 applicants, 73% asked to be considered for one NYU campus, with 27% seeking consideration for two or more campuses. Applicants come from 163 countries, with 25% being non-U.S. citizens, an increase of nine percent from the class of 2016.

“We are very pleased by the continued high and expanding level of interest in NYU among high school students throughout the world. It is clear that NYU’s global network and the unrivaled opportunities it represents is resonating with students both in the US, and abroad, and has allowed us to successfully compete for those young men and women who are truly committed to making their mark,” said Randall C. Deike, NYU’s vice president for enrollment management and university institutional research.

In total, NYU operates 14 sites around the world -- the three degree-granting campuses and 11 global academic centers -- at which students are able to study during semesters away from their degree-granting campus. Furthermore, some of the students accepted to NYU New York may choose to begin their studies in London, Paris, or Florence.

There are just over 6,000 spaces available in NYU's freshman class across its global network, with approximately 5,500 spaces for the New York campus, 235 in Abu Dhabi, and 300 in Shanghai. Of the more than 52,000 applicants, 96 percent expressed interest in New York (49,261 applicants), 24 percent expressed interest in Abu Dhabi (12,688 applicants), and 26 percent expressed interest in Shanghai (13,491 applicants). (Note: The number of applicants, 52,727, is unduplicated, but because applicants are able to express interest in more than one campus, applicants can be included for more than one campus in the above percentages.)

The University offered admission to 17,483 students to its New York campus for an acceptance rate of 34% (note: this percentage includes those admitted to the School of Engineering. An apples-to-apples comparison between 2013 and 2014 – i.e., excluding the School of Engineering figures – would show the admissions rate remaining the same from last year to this year – 31%); 2,212 were admitted through Early Decision. The University admitted 317 students to NYU Abu Dhabi – 149 of them through Early Decision – for an acceptance rate of 3%. The University’s admissions process for NYU Shanghai is not complete until the release of the gao kao national higher education test results for Chinese students. Thus far, 202 international students have been admitted.

New York University, founded in 1831, is one of the world’s foremost research universities and a member of the selective Association of American Universities. The first Global Network University, it has degree-granting university campuses in New York, Abu Dhabi, and Shanghai; 11 other global academic sites; and sends more students to study abroad than any other U.S. college or university. Through its many schools and colleges, NYU conducts research and provides education in the arts and sciences, law, medicine, business, dentistry, education, nursing, the cinematic and performing arts, music and studio arts, public administration, social work, engineering, and continuing and professional studies, among other areas.
