New York University College of Dentistry researcher, Dr. Shoshana Yakar, an associate professor of Basic Science and Craniofacial Biology, has had a research article recommended for inclusion in F1000Prime, a collection of over 145,000 recommendations of top articles in biology and medicine, contributed by the F1000 Faculty.

Her article, “Reductions in serum IGF-1 during aging impair health span,” published in Aging Cell, was recommended as being of special significance in its field by Faculty of 1000 Member Andrzej Bartke.

About Shoshana Yakar, Ph.D. Dr. Yakar is an Associate Professor at the New York University College of Dentistry, in the Department of Basic Science and Craniofacial Biology. She earned a B.S., MsC. and her PhD. from Tel-aviv University. In 1996, Dr. Yakar attended Post-Doc training at the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases part of the National Institutes of Health.

A major focus of Dr. Yakar’s work, funded by two NIH awards, is aimed at understanding gene regulation in bone cells, through understanding the role(s) of insulin-like growth factors (IGF's) in tissue growth, development and repair. In particular, her work has dealt with the question of distinguishing paracrine effects of locally produced IGF from endocrine effects of circulating IGF synthesized primarily by the liver.

Her ongoing investigations identifies bone compartments affected by serum/tissue IGF-1, bone cellular population affected by serum/tissue IGF-1 deficiency and determines the mechanism, by which serum/tissue IGF-1 modulates skeletal integrity. Her research adds significant information on the relationship between serum/tissue IGF-1 and bone mineral density positively affecting treatment outcomes for musculoskeletal abnormalities.

About F1000Prime--Recommendations of the best research articles in biology and medicine from a faculty of global experts. F1000Prime filters the literature and highlights top articles as recommended by our faculty of ~6,000 expert scientists and clinical researchers, covering over 40 disciplines. Articles are rated and the faculty provide commentaries to explain why they recommend each article. F1000Journal Clubs, an integral part of F1000Prime, encourages and facilitates scientists to discuss articles and share their conclusions.
