Five First Growths of Bordeaux will be Tasted

You don’t need $10,000 – although you do need to be 21 – to experience some of the world’s finest wines during a new, noncredit course being offered by the New York University School of Continuing and Professional Studies (NYU-SCPS) next month.

Taught by Dr. Bjorn Hanson, a renowned hospitality and travel industry expert, and wine connoisseur, the course, “Understanding and Tasting the World's Finest Wines,” will take place on Monday, October 7, from 5:30 to 9:30 p.m. at the Washington Square Campus. The cost to attend is $495.

A sensory delight for wine aficionados, the samples offered for tasting during the class – the five first growths of Bordeaux – are rare. “Most wine experts and enthusiasts agree – the finest and most prestigious wines in the world are the five first growths of Bordeaux,” said Hanson, divisional dean and clinical professor at the NYU-SCPS Preston Robert Tisch Center for Hospitality, Tourism, and Sports Management.

The five “first growths” refer to a classification system, developed in 1855, for the Bordeaux wines of France, and are based upon winemaking techniques that have stood the test of time. The best vintages of these wines retail for between $1,000 and $10,000 per bottle, according to Hanson.

In his class, oenophiles will have the opportunity to taste all five first growths and to learn why these wines are special and what makes them great. The class also covers the entire wine experience, including storing, opening, pouring, and tasting wines, as well as wine glasses, collecting wine, recommended books and magazines, purchasing wine (retail and auctions), and less expensive wine choices.

Students must be 21 years or older and must provide proof of age at the beginning of the class. For more information or to register, please visit scps.nyu.edu/ce/finewine or call
