On Saturday July 20th, twelve of NYU's students, staff and friends, braved a summer’s heat wave temperatures to volunteer for the first ever NYUGreen Day of Service at the 6th annual City of Water Day on Governors Island, NYC. The annual event, which is hosted by the Metropolitan Waterfront Alliance, provides free and fun waterfront activities to over 20,000 New Yorkers.

“NYUGreen volunteers played a necessary role for MWA, filling a variety of volunteer positions,” said Jessie Baker, coordinator of the Sustainability Task Force and engagement, NYU Office of Sustainability. “This was a great opportunity to showcase the NYU community's altruism, while reinforcing education about the waterfront.”

Wearing purple t-shirts, NYUGreen volunteers were among the largest groups represented at the event.  NYU volunteers helped to manage the boat tour ticketing, helped maintain crowds for the tour lines, and guided attendees to their destinations. Some volunteers even had the opportunity to ride along on boat tours to help garner signatures for MWA's platform petition to demonstrate the importance of the waterfront to incoming New York City political officials.

The MWA's main objective is to engage and connect New Yorkers with the waterfront region.  The City of Water Day event simultaneously set the stage for a rich local, historic, and water-friendly educational platform.

“The event was the first of hopefully many NYUGreen Service Days in NYC,” said Baker.    “We have been coordinating within the NYU Sustainability network to gather a group of civic-minded and sustainability-conscious volunteers who are interested in participating as a team in NYUGreen Service Day events across NYC.”
