New York University College of Nursing (NYUCN) is pleased to announce that the Helene Fuld HealthTrust, has awarded a $960,000 grant to fund financial aid for students enrolled in the Accelerated Second Degree Baccalaureate Program (ASDBP). The grant will be used to establish the Helene Fuld Health Trust Scholarship Fund for Accelerated Second Degree Baccalaureate Nursing Students.

NYUCN Receives $960,000 from the Helene Fuld Health Trust for Scholarships

"Accelerated second degree Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree students are the most financially needy group as they have limited access to funds to support their studies,” said Eileen Sullivan-Marx, Dean and Erline Perkins McGriff Professor of NYUCN.  “The Trust’s grant will support these students and relieve their financial burden as they move ahead in their degrees.  Many of them will now be able to ultimately pursue graduate degrees with a lower financial burden.”

The grant will be paid in installments of $320,000 over a period of three years. $160,000 of each installment will be used immediately for current financial aid for students enrolled in the NYUCN ASDBP. The remaining $160,000 of the grant each year, for a total of $480,000, will be placed in an endowment fund. The monies generated by the endowment will be used to continue the College’s Helene Fuld Health Trust Scholarship Fund.

NYUCN will award a cohort of eight ASDBP students entering in the Fall 2013 semester and an additional cohort of eight ASDBP students entering in the Spring 2014 semester.  Each student will be awarded $10,000 over the course of four semesters ($2500/semester) to assist them in pursuing their degrees.

The United States is in the midst of a nursing shortage that is expected to intensify as baby boomers age and the need for health care grows. The Institute of Medicine’s (IOM) “The Future of Nursing: Leading Change, Advancing Health” report calls for increasing the percentage of baccalaureate nurses to 80 percent by 2020. The Helene Fuld Health Trust Scholarship Fund at NYUCN will greatly assist nursing students in obtaining an accelerated degree while also in meeting the recommendations put forth by the IOM.

“Baccalaureate education that prepares nurses at the bedside is critical because research links BSN-educated RNs with improved patient outcomes,” said Dr. James Pace, NYUCN’s Associate Dean for Undergraduate Programs. “For nursing students, research has shown that a baccalaureate education develops stronger skills in leadership, critical thinking, and knowledge of population health, all key components necessary to meet the challenges of our nation’s current and future health care needs.”
