Two students at the NYU Tisch Clive Davis Institute of Recorded Music have won the opportunity to mix their original songs with famed sound engineer, Jordan Young A.K.A. DJ Swivel. The contest is the culmination of two student workshops led by Young, who will work with the students to mix the songs live at Jungle City Studios on Friday, April 26. The songs will then be “mastered” by Grammy winning mastering engineer Chris Gehringer.

Clive Davis Students Win Prize to Mix Songs with DJ Swivel

Best known as personal engineer to Beyonce, DJ Swivel has worked with some of the world’s most influential artists including Jay-Z, Whitney Houston, Britney Spears, and Kanye West. During the month of April, he hosted two workshops at the Clive Davis institute during which he opened up several of his engineering sessions and then dissected them in order to show students exactly how they were created and mixed.

Students were then encouraged to submit an original song to win a chance to have it mixed by DJ Swivel while acting as assistants on the session. The two songs selected were “You Don’t Know” by junior Gian Bravo in collaboration with Toluwanimi Adeyemo, Kiah Victoria and Patrick Droney and “It’s Alright” by sophomore Mike Adubato. After the mixing session, the songs will be master engineered by Gehringer of Sterling Sound.

“We’re incredibly fortunate at the Clive Davis Institute to have access to talented artists like DJ Swivel who genuinely want to pass on what they know, as well as incredibly motivated, high-caliber students who know how to make the most of every opportunity,” said Jeff Rabhan, chair of the Clive Davis Institute. “These sorts of exchanges between leaders in the field and our students are exactly what our educational approach is about, since they both promote creativity and lead to real opportunities for our students in the world of recorded music.”
