One of Israel’s preeminent writers, Yehoshua is the author of Mr. Mani, Five Seasons, A Journey to the End of the Millennium, The Liberated Bride, and A Woman in Jerusalem, among others. Yehoshua’s novels have been translated into 28 languages and several were performed on the screen and the stage.

The Retrospective, which won the 2012 Prix Médicis étranger, France’s top literary prize for translated fiction, centers on the life of an Israeli film director who reflects on his life in the arts and among his fellow artists—and especially upon his life-long struggle balancing artistic integrity with moral commitment. The novel, set in present-day Spain and Israel, is a blend of ideas—about religion and art, youth and age, and the anxiety of influence.
