Las Otras: (Re)Imaging Queer Latin@s” is an exhibition of naturally lit, medium-format portraits by Lupe Salinas, the 2012 Constantiner Fellowship award winner in the Department of Photography & Imaging at New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts.  It will open November 30, 2012 and remain on view through January 2, 2013.

Established in 2005, the Leon and Michaela Contantiner Fellowship enables one graduating senior from the Department of Photography & Imaging each year to pursue a project. The Constantiners are photography collectors interested in supporting promising young artists.

Originally from Idaho, Lupe Salinas (’11) is a New York-based artist who explores themes of home, family, and identity within the Latino/a culture, which is reflected in her BFA thesis, Our House On Main.  Las Otras” is a collaboration meant to show the diversity and solidarity of Queer Latin@s. They are a small group that has been largely underrepresented; their identity is an intersection of two distinct and diverse subcultures. Like the @ symbol in Latin@, they are both the ‘a’ and ‘o,’—female and male, and identities in between. Las Otras are Queer Latin@s.  By (re)imaging an often disregarded group through collaborative image and text, “Las Otras” offers insight to (re)think and (re)visualize the Queer Latin@ identity.

The exhibition runs from Nov. 30, 2012 through Jan. 17, 2013 in the Gulf & Western Gallery, located at 721 Broadway. Gallery hours are 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. weekdays, and noon to 5 p.m. Saturdays. The exhibition is open to the public and admission is free. A photo ID is required when entering the building. (Please note: The building will be closed for NYU’s winter recess from Dec. 22, 2012 through Jan. 1, 2013.)

The Department of Photography & Imaging is an intensive four-year BFA program centered on the making and understanding of images. It is a diverse department embracing multiple perspectives. The students work in virtually all modes of analog, digital, and multimedia photo-based image making, exploring photo-based imagery as personal and cultural expression.
