The Taub Center for Israel Studies will host “100 Years of Hashomer Hatzair: Assessing the Significance of a Political Movement,” a one-day conference on the Zionist youth movement that began in Austria-Hungary, on Sunday, December 2, 2-7 p.m. at NYU’s King Juan Carlos I of Spain Center.

New York University’s Taub Center for Israel Studies will host “100 Years of Hashomer Hatzair: Assessing the Significance of a Political Movement,” a one-day conference on the Zionist youth movement that began in Austria-Hungary, on Sunday, December 2, 2-7 p.m. at NYU’s King Juan Carlos I of Spain Center (first-floor screening room), 53 Washington Square South (between Thompson and Sullivan Streets).

Opening remarks will be delivered by Professor Ronald Zweig, director of the Taub Center for Israel Studies, and Gal Peleg of Hashomer Hatzair USA. Conference sessions are as follows:

* 2 - 3:30 p.m.: Screening of “Inventing Our Life,” a documentary on kibbutz life by Toby Perl Freilich
* 4 – 7 p.m.: Paper Presentations and Discussion

Presentations include: “Against the Stream: Nine Decades of Hashomer Hatzair in North America” (Arial Hurwitz, the Open University and Academic College Seminar Hakibbutzim); “Like a Phoenix: The Revival of Hashomer Hatzair Youth Movement in the Aftermath of the Holocaust” (Eli Tzur, Givat Haviva /Academic College Seminar Hakibbutzim); “The Impact of Experiential Education and Dialogue in Adolescence” (Efrat Levy, Empire State College State University); and “The Relevance of Hashomer Hatzair Ideology to Contemporary Israel” (Anat Maor, the Open University and NYU’s Taub Center for Israel Studies).
