DPI@30: Act vs React, an exhibition commemorating the 30th anniversary of the founding of The Department of Photography & Imaging at New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts, will open October 4 and run through November 17, 2012.  It will feature 90 works, including color and black-and-white photographs, videos, tapestries, and mixed media by alumni, faculty, and a current student of the Department.  A reception to celebrate the exhibition will be held at the Tisch School on October 18, from 5 to 7:30 p.m. and is open to the public.

DPI @ 30: Act vs React was organized to mark the occasion of the founding of the Department in 1982 by current faculty members Thomas Drysdale and Paul Owen.  The exhibition explores the ideas that have shaped photography and new media arts since the Department’s founding.   It is not intended to be a comprehensive overview of all the work by former students and faculty but rather to introduce a selection of photographs, installations and media-based works that demonstrate the sensibilities of the photographers and artists who currently teach or work in the department, many of whom are also alumni.  Moreover, it articulates the personal, political, and cultural expressions of the photographers and artists with a visual voice that is represented in the over thirty years of lens-based imagery presented.  While the works are diverse in themes from image and text, landscape to body image, identity, portraiture, journalistic, conceptual, and new media, the show can be viewed as a mirror to the unique experiences of an integrated curriculum at Tisch. It also creates a new context in which to re-imagine the vision of the founders of the department.

Works in the exhibition are by: Ifetayo Abdus-Salam ’06, Tarek Al-Ghoussein ’85, Alex Arbuckle ’13, Mike Berlin ’06, Chris Bernsten ’08, Andrew Bordwin ’87, Mark Bussell*, Alan Chin ’93, Sonia Louise Davis*, Rose DeSiano ’01, Erika deVries*, Tom Drysdale*, Aaron Fineman ’96, Adrienne Garbini ’05, Wyatt Gallery ’97, Ariel Goldberg ’05, Hiroyuki Ito ’97, Mark Jenkinson*, Courtney Johnson ’04, Michael Koehler ’05, Katie Kline ’05, Editha Mesina*, Diane Meyer ’99, Lorie Novak*, Paul Owen*, Karl Peterson ’89, Alice Proujansky ’02, Rich Renaldi ’90, Dan Sakamoto ’09, Bayeté Ross Smith*, Paul Mpagi Sepuya ’04, Emily Shur ’98, Will Steacy ’03, Hank Willis Thomas ’98, Mia Torres ’11, and Deb Willis*.  (An * designates faculty and staff.)
