Web-based course now updated with the latest evidence-based protocols for educating the bedside nurse

NICHE (Nurses Improving Care for Healthsystem Elders) announces the release of the Geriatric Resource Nurse (GRN) Core Curriculum (2nd edition 2012), an online course designed for use by NICHE members who educate nurses in best practices for hospitalized older adults. The GRN curriculum is based on the book Evidence-Based Geriatric Nursing Protocols for Best Practice (4th edition 2012). The updated 2nd edition of the curriculum now contains the latest evidence-based practice content known to experts, and is designed for easier access and navigation.

The Geriatric Resource Nurse curriculum is part of the NICHE Core Curriculum, which also includes the Geriatric Patient Care Associate (GPCA) curriculum for patient care associates and the Introduction to Gerontology curriculum for all personnel across all hospital departments. The recently added Nursing Care of the Older Adult with Cancer and Critical Care Nursing of Older Adults courses are also part of the Core Curriculum. Combined, these curricula enable educators to deliver a comprehensive education program of evidence-based geriatric nursing care in their hospitals and allow hospitals to elevate their NICHE programs to greater levels of success.

“The underlying NICHE goal of improving the geriatric knowledge and expertise of the bedside nurse is foundational to implementing system-wide enhancements in the care of older adult patients,” says Marie Boltz, Ph.D., RN, GNP-BC, associate director, Hartford Institute for Geriatric Nursing, Practice Initiatives, and one of the editors of the GRN curriculum. “The Geriatric Resource Nurse curriculum is an educational and clinical intervention model that prepares staff nurses as the resource person available to other nurses for geriatric issues.”

The completed course provides 20 contact hours. The course can be accessed by NICHE hospitals in the online NICHE Knowledge Center at http://www.nicheprogram.org/courses/114.

The NICHE Knowledge Center houses an extensive portfolio of tools and resources for healthcare providers, organizations, and consumers to use in improving quality of care and patient outcomes.
