New York City Council’s Land Use Committee Approves Modified Version of NYU Core Expansion

The New York City Council’s Land Use Committee today approved a modified version of the NYU Core expansion plan by a vote of 19-1. The proposed expansion plan now goes to the full City Council for a vote on Wednesday, July 25.

Under the plan, which was revised in discussions with Council Member Margaret Chin and the City Council, NYU will be able to build four new buildings on the superblocks it owns on the Washington Square campus for new classrooms, labs, performance space, dorms and faculty housing. The plan will also increase the amount of publicly accessibly open space on the superblocks.

“Today we thank the City Council Land Use Committee and Council Member Margaret Chin for her leadership and vision in creating a plan that allows the University to grow on its own property while at the same time ensuring that Greenwich Village maintains its neighborhood character,” said Alicia Hurley, NYU Vice President for Government Affairs and Community Engagement.

“The modifications include an overall reduction in density, funding from NYU to maintain both the public and private open space on the blocks, improvements over the next year to existing open spaces, a provision for community facility spaces throughout the sites, and a commitment to MWLBE goals.”
