NYU’s Department of Photography & Imaging Announces a Photography Retrospective of the Artist Gordon Parks to Go On View in September

Gordon Parks: Crossroads On View September 4 - 25, 2012

The Department of Photography & Imaging at New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts has announced it will exhibit a retrospective of photographs by the artist Gordon Parks in September 2012.  Entitled Gordon Parks: Crossroads, the exhibition will include 45 black-and-white and color photographs celebrating the life’s work of one of America’s most accomplished 20th century artists.  It will open September 4 and remain on view through September 25, 2012.

Photographer, poet, novelist, composer, musician and filmmaker, Gordon Parks (1912-2006) spent a lifetime shattering barriers in his pursuit of truth, beauty, social justice, and artistic expression.  In addition to the retrospective, the Department of Photography & Imaging will also host a reception at the Tisch School of the Arts on September 14 featuring speaker Philip Brookman, chief curator of the Corcoran Gallery of Art.  The reception will be open to the public.

The exhibition and reception are a part of the series of events presented by the Gordon Parks Foundation in honor and celebration of the centennial of Gordon Parks’ birth. Widely known as the most important African American photographer of the twentieth century, Parks’ work combined a unique artistic style with a commitment to humanitarianism. For more than half a century, he exposed the face of American poverty with sympathy and dignity, often concentrating on the plight of African Americans and immigrants.  A pivotal figure in the history of civil rights in America, as well as the global human rights movement, Parks used his artistic skill to champion social change.  His enduring legacy continues to inspire and challenge us.

Gordon Parks: Crossroads will be on view at the Tisch School of the Arts, 721 Broadway and open from 10 a.m. - 7 p.m. weekdays, and noon to 5 p.m. Saturdays.  It will be installed in the Gulf+Western Gallery (main floor, rear of lobby).  The exhibition is open to the public and admission is free.  A photo ID is required when entering the building.  For further information, call 212.998.1930, or visit www.photo.tisch.nyu.edu

The Department of Photography & Imaging is an intensive four-year BFA program centered on the making and understanding of images. It is a diverse department embracing multiple perspectives. The students work in virtually all modes of analog, digital, and multimedia photo-based image making, exploring photo-based imagery as personal and cultural expression.  For further information, visit www.photo.tisch.nyu.edu.

The Gordon Parks Foundation permanently preserves the work of Gordon Parks, makes it available to the public through exhibitions, books, and electronic media and supports artistic and educational activities that advance what Gordon described as "the common search for a better life and a better world." The Foundation is a division of the Meserve-Kunhardt Foundation.
