Affordable Death in the United States – How Can We Afford to Die? at the Nursing Economic$ Summit, June 6th

NYU College of Nursing’s Dr. Christine Kovner is Available for Comment

Death in America, a costly, uncertain and stressful process that, all too often for those in the United States, is an event where dignity and choice take a back seat to bureaucracy and the business of dying.

An expert look at this controversial topic kicks-off the 5th Nursing Economic$ Summit on June 6, 2012.   In the opening session, How We Can Afford to Die, New York University College of Nursing’s Dr. Christine Tassone Kovner, will co-lecture with Nursing Economic$ editor and Summit chairperson, Dr. Donna Nickitas.

Drs. Kovner and Nickitas will address the many issues surrounding the process of dying in the United States, and discuss how, as a society, we address the substantial financial barriers and insurance restrictions incurred in the last six months of life. Working to answer the question “Life at what cost?”, the session will explore how nurses, health and other thought leaders can work toward providing high-quality care that has realistic economic cost at the end-of-life.

Dr. Kovner recently served as co-editor of a special May/June 2012 issue of Nursing Economic$ that delved into the issues and hot topics related to dying and end-of-life care. A feature article co-authored by Dr. Kovner, Dr. Edward Lusk, and Nellie M. Selander, outlines an eight-point action plan to lower costs associated with end-of-life care in the United States. Based on analysis of six articles presented in the special issue, the plan focuses on two primary areas: an expansion of hospice and palliative care, and an increased use of advance directives. Dr. Kovner’s findings from that work will bring considerable insight to the panel discussion.
