A team of undergraduate students from the Clive Davis Institute of Recorded Music in the Tisch School of the Arts has taken second place in the Fantastic Scholastic 8 Recording Competition, sponsored by the microphone and audio electronics manufacturer Shure Incorporated.  The competition was open to teams of students enrolled in college programs focusing on audio engineering in the United States.

The NYU students are Jacob Blumberg (’12), Spencer Doren (’13), Phoebe Ryan (’13), Vaughn Sulit (’12), and Damian Wiesman (’13).   The team’s faculty advisor was Jim Anderson, professor in the Clive Davis Institute. Ryan’s original composition, You Are Not Alone, was used for the recording the team was required to submit.  As runner-up, the NYU team won a selection of professional-quality microphones and headphones for the school.  Team members were also given their own microphone.

A total of ten teams were selected to compete in the finals.  Each team was required to submit a recording of a live ensemble using only Shure microphones supplied by the company.  Recordings were judged on a variety of criteria, including clarity of sound, microphone technique, mixing, and performance/production.

The other teams were: Clemson University, Delta State University, DePaul University, Middle Tennessee State University, New England School of Communications, Tribeca Flashpoint Media Arts Academy, University of Miami Frost School of Music, University of the Pacific, and William Paterson University.
