An exhibition of photographs entitled City of Salt, by Nicholas Calcott, the 2011 Tierney Fellowship award recipient from the Department of Photography & Imaging in the Kanbar Institute of Film and Television at New York University, will go on view May 31 at the Tisch School of the Arts.

City of Salt is a metropolis described in photographs, a place simultaneously all cities and one imagined city defined by a tangled knot of relationships. “It is an exploration into the nature of these agglomerations of connections – what holds them together and divides them and the links they share within themselves and with each other,” Calcott said. “The city as node and the city as fungus and a visual evidence of the network hidden below it.”

City of Salt opens May 31 and will remain on view through August 4, 2012 in the Gulf+Western Gallery, located at 721 Broadway (at Waverly Place) in NYC.  Gallery hours are 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. weekdays and noon to 5 p.m. Saturdays.  It is open to the public and admission is free.  Photo identification is required to enter the building.  For further information, call (212) 998-1930, or visit http://www.photo.tisch.nyu.edu.

Established by the Tierney Family Foundation in 2005, the annual Tierney Fellowship grant is awarded to a Photography & Imaging alumnus who has shown excellence in the field of photography and Ha graduated within the past seven years.  The Fellowship seeks to find aspiring artists who will be leaders and assist them in overcoming challenges that photographers face at the start of their careers.

Nicholas Calcott is a photographer whose primary concerns are the themes of place and history.  His work is notable for its visual fluency and references to technology and biology.  He has been published in such magazines as Dwell, Fast Company, Travel + Leisure, and Wallpaper, among others.  His work has been shown in group shows at Le Bal, the Chateau d’Eau Gallery, and Le Garage.  He is also the author of the blog On Shadow.

The Department of Photography & Imaging at the Tisch School of the Arts is a four-year B.F.A. program centered on the making and understanding of image.  Students explore photo-based imagery as personal and cultural expression.  Situated within a university, the program offers students both the intensive focus of an arts curriculum and a serious and broad grounding in the liberal arts.
