Clothing Swap, Lectures, and a Sustainable Street Fair Top the Week’s Activities

New York University will participate in the 42nd annual Earth Day festivities with a week-long celebration of eco-friendly events including the 14th Annual Earth Week Street Fair, film & lectures, green projects, and an environmentally friendly clothing swap.  All events are free and open to the public.  For the complete schedule of Earth Day/Week related events, please see the NYU Sustainability page.

The Bronx is Blooming

Join the CAS Dean’s Service Honor Corps (DSHC) as they beautify The Gully on Mosholu Parkway; Cross streets: Webster Ave and East Mosholu Parkway South, accessible by the 4 and D trains. Also accessible by the metro north railroad to the New York Botanical Garden stop. Come help make the park cleaner, greener, and more enjoyable for everyone!  The DSHC will be mulching flower beds, pruning shrubs, and stewarding young trees.  If you wish to travel as a group, meet in front of the W 4th St Starbucks at 10:00 am. Green the Streets!  Compost for Brooklyn Garden

Prepare to get your hands dirty as we head to Brooklyn for a day of caring for street trees!  Join the Urban Planning Students Association and the Wagner Environmental Policy Alliance to support the fantastic work of Compost for Brooklyn, founded by Wagner student Louise Bruce (’12).  We will be building tree guards and improving urban soils with compost and gardening.  Snacks provided by the Parkville Farmshare, a new local CSA.  RSVP to Ada Welch at ada.welch@nyu.edu.

“What’s for Dinner?” a documentary seeking to shed light on two big questions: can China’s 1.3 billion people eat as much meat and dairy as those in industrialized countries without destroying the planet—or its climate; and do they really want to?  These are stories of Chinese women and men encountering, helping foster, or offering alternatives to large-scale industrial animal agriculture.

Join us for our 14th Annual Earth Day Street Fair!   This year’s theme is “Mobile Ecological Innovators” and we’re bringing in a variety of artists and their moving exhibitions.  Come see a truck retrofitted with a farm, a trailer that’s become a traveling science lab, bringing education to underprivileged communities, and much more.  Enjoy free food prepared by NYU’s newly inaugurated Student Food Co-Op!.  Free and open to the public

Gallatin Presents: The Big Walk 2

In honor of Earth Day, Gallatin School of Individualized Studies is hosting a BIG WALK down the entire length of Fifth Avenue!  The walk will start at E 142nd Street and 5th Ave—way up top—at 9:00 a.m.  Arrive early for free caffeinated beverages!  The closest subway stops are the 145th St station on the 3 train or the 138th St station n the 4 or 5 trains.  The walk will end at Washington Square, around 2:30 p.m. with a finish line celebration. Teaming up with the NYC CoolRoofs Program and NYC Service, we will paint a city rooftop white to help reduce building temperatures, reduce CO2 emissions, and improve air quality! The NYC CoolRoofs initiative enables building owners to cool their roofs by applying a reflective white coating that reduces energy use.  The program supports New York City’s goal to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 30% by 2030.  All materials and lunch will be provided.

Celebrate Earth Day by bringing in a bag of your old clothes and swapping for some new treasures!  Then join a DIY workshop and learn how to re-accessorize your new finds.  Can’t part with your clothes?  Then feel free to drop off books, CDs, or anything else you’d like to share.  Live bands will be performing starting at 3pm.   Everything left over will be donated to charity.

The Yes Fest: A Celebration of Successful Activism and Pranks

Play and Learn with the Environmental Law Society!

The Environmental Law Society is hosting an afternoon of games and refreshments to promote sustainable initiatives on campus, such as composting bins in the cafeterias and refrigerated water bottle refilling stations in the law school buildings.   Try your hand at a bean bag toss and learn how to properly sort your everyday trash into recycling and composting bins.  Participants will be rewarded with stainless steel water bottles!

NYU and New School Tree Planting Workshop

318 E15th Street (between 2nd and 1st Aves)

Prepare to join forces and meet some fellow NYC collegiates with the New School’s Urban Forestry Club for a day of tree planting, street tree care, and, of course, delicious fresh food! Meet at the New School at 10am (318 E15th Street), for coffee and tree-planting, then take a guided nature walk to NYU’s Green Dorm on 7th Street, where you can learn how to show some love to neglected urban trees, all while dining on a delicious lunch provided by NYU’s very own student food co-op.  Supplies are provided--just bring your green thumbs!

Kimmel Windows Gallery Exhibition on Sustainability at NYU  

An ongoing Earth Week feature: "Sustainability at NYU: Did you know?", an exhibition showcasing the programs and initiatives spearheaded by the university over the past five years.

The exhibit, free and accessible 24/7 by the public, will be on display in the street-level Kimmel Windows Gallery, located at La Guardia Place & West 3rd St until May 18th, 2012.
